Oh, are we talking about battle teams or plot relevance, because if we're talking battle, that's an entirely different list.  Give me a few, and I'll get back with you.

The first post implies both, in my opinion. So I'll answer both :P

Plot: I tended to avoid the characters with nearly zilch development. As I'm replaying the game, I'm going through and playing around with more of the characters that have El Nido-specific relevance (A la the Devas, Glenn, Luccia etc.)

Outside of those and the *main* characters (obviously Serge/Kid/Harle), the only other character I find interesting would be Starky. C'mon, he's a friggin' alien.

Battlewise: My first playthrough's final party was Serge/Kid/Riddel, just because Riddel happened to be so very awesome at healing. Excluding that, I never used her again. For power, I tended to go with Serge and Grobyc, as I had no clue how to get any of the other characters and went with the first option I had. Same with Korcha. That gets rid of two potential powerhouses (Glenn/Pierre), so Grobyc I found to be a decent fighter. Also thought Harle was good, especially for her level 5 element tech.

On my following playthroughs, I basically pick at random, but normally finish the game with Serge/Kid/Glenn, as X-Strike's cool >_>.

Going OT back to Blue Magic: While I have not been a fan of it in most games, Gau rocked in FFVI.  You couldn't control him, but most fights are repetition anyway.  He was the most versatile character in the game other than Gogo (who could also use Rage if given to one of his command slots), with a Rage for every situation.  Once he got the NightShade Rage he was absolutely broken, though.

NeoFio is possibly the most worthless character in Chrono Cross.  Turnip is very similar to her, but seems to defy his own stats (are they really his stats?).  He also could equip a Stamina Belt and a Slasher to become a very usable character.  I don't know what you could do to NeoFio to offset her case of horrible.  She gets my vote.  Luccia may be a close second.

The most useless battle-wise:
    Grobyc (severely overrated)
    Guile (pre-New Game +)
    NeoFio (weaksauce x10)
    Pierre (pre-Hero equipment)
    Pip (with Pounce +4)
    Riddel (no attack Techs)[/list:u]

    The most useless story-wise:
      Janice (just.. ugh)
      Leah (just an allusion)
Pierre (the Hero — so what?)
      Poshul (... mrrg)
Starky (one hell of a deus ex machina ¬¬)
      Steena (a walking encyclopedia)[/list:u]

I agree with most of those, but Riddel?  She is quite possibly the second most powerful magic user in the game, right behind Razzly.

I don't see why Grobyc keeps making these lists.  He is highly overrated, but his stats are just unexpected: good defense and HP, very little attack or magic power.  He is not what you would expect from a living weapon, but there are far worse characters.

Story-wise, Funguy really is most useless.  It seems like they planned more for him that was completely missing.  He never even manned up to Lisa!  Maybe the choice to return to human or not could have been up to the player and determined his Lvl 7 attack or something.  It would have been good if he could have warned his other self rather than just seeing him in agony.

I guess there were infinitely many missed opportunities for all of the characters.  I'd love for them to make a remake with all of the stuff they wanted to put into the game in (they could have worked in Guile=Magus...just make the third path into Viper Manor some other useless character, and make the Magus plot play out throughout the game (but only make Magus playable near the end)).  It would be great to see a "Director's Cut."  I'd hope for a FFVI remake long before a Chrono Cross remake, though.
