Nintendo Wii
« on: April 27, 2006, 10:34:13 pm »
Well, its been named theNintendo WiiNo, I'm serious.

Quote
"Introducing ... Wii. As in "we." While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?"

"Wii sounds like 'we,' which emphasizes this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii."

"Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd."

"So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

So what do you think of the name?
This thread isn't all about name-bashing. Talk about the console too damnit!

Where's the option that says "I don't care that much, but the North American consumer base will, because the childish appearance is off-putting to our culture and the name might very well kill Nintendo's North American sales, which is something that would suck because it'll probably be pretty damn good at its core"?

I was introduced to Nintendo many years after I was born. First with the NES up until 1991, I played Mario a lot along with Cyrstalis and a couple other games. Then came SNES, Street Fighter, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Pilotwings, and some other great classics. I havn't forgotten any of the button combos to my old games, they are still in floating around in my head just waiting to be used.

Unfortunately, my brother sold our SNES (still have the NES) to get a Playstation. I was devasted. I was in love with the SNES because it was my life during elementary school. I never knew anyone to this date who could ever beat me at Street Fighter II TURBO as Guile. He is my favorite character to this date. Anywho, when I transitioned to playstation, I lost all hopes of ever hearing of "Nintendo" again.

Now they got these new systems and what not. (Getting on topic now) The new name for this console is . . . interesting nontheless but nothing will compare to PS3 when it comes out. I never really followed up with any other new Nintendo system made. I'd wish I did because I heard N64 and GC had some great titles and games. I've missed out on a lot.

Wow, I really went off topic for a bit, but thanks Zep for bringing some memories back! I would definately say let's give them some gratitude for still hanging in there in competition with Sony and XboooX. As for this Wii name, I am not all that crazy about it.

People, here is our only hope. The NES and SNES were not called "Nintendo Entertainment System", or "Super Nintendo Entertainment System" in Japan. They were the Famicom, and the Super Famicom. Now, pray to God that Nintendo changes its name in America to something that doesn't suck horse dick.

Heh heh sorry for changing the voting options people, but...

You know we will get used to it. Wii is short, simple, and easy to remember. The [name is] also different, unlike the abysmal Nintendo 64, Nintendo Entertainment System, SUPER Nintendo Entertainment System (note the Super, obviously making the machine a bajillion times better) and of course, the GAME CUBE!! Plus, for once, we won't need abbreviations. But the whole philosophy about it being "we" sucks balls.
And Famicon sounded totally better than SNES or NES.

Sentenal, you're a moron for saying that everything I just said, which strangely was based on opinion (well, most was) was wrong. Which part/s?

The n64 was a good system. Goldeneye 007 defined modern mission oriented FPS games, and Super Mario 64 was the groundbreaking 3D platformer that paved the way for all that followed.

"Oui" means yes in French. This is seriously dumb.
