Awesome article KebreI. A small percentage of caucasians have that mutation presumably because the CCR5 receptor also provides protection against the black plague bacterium Yersinia pestis. Their ancestors must have survived the plague and thus natural selection amplified the mutation from a vanishingly small number of individuals into 1-3% of the population, which is substantial. That patient is very lucky. Both leukemia and two strains of HIV are in remission. I hope he doesn't blow it and get infected again from unprotected sex or intravenous drug use. Which is probably how he got infected with two strains in the first place.
I think before I die I will see a gene therapy cure for AIDS, and substantial progress in using various types of therapy (including gene therapy) to target and cure most types of cancer. The next century will see a massive technological revolution in medicine.
