Their ancestors must have survived the plague and thus natural selection amplified the mutation from a vanishingly small number of individuals into 1-3% of the population, which is substantial. That patient is very lucky. Both leukemia and two strains of HIV are in remission. I hope he doesn't blow it and get infected again from unprotected sex or intravenous drug use. Which is probably how he got infected with two strains in the first place.
I think before I die I will see a gene therapy cure for AIDS, and substantial progress in using various types of therapy (including gene therapy) to target and cure most types of cancer. The next century will see a massive technological revolution in medicine.
