Never knew about this. The idea of later classic thinkers referring to its preceding era as a "Golden Age" is romantically tantalizing.

Interesting. How would you fix the budget? It's an interactive thing. Here's mine:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/11/13/weekinreview/deficits-graphic.html?choices=001005qz

A lot of the options involve cutting federal services. A couple notes:

  • Estate tax: hell yes, return it to Clinton era levels. A capitalist meritocracy depends on every person's individual effort, not their inheritance. I forgot the term for it, but there is a philosophical standard of ethics that states, policy should be shaped in light of a newborn's inability to choose what station of life they're born into. Thus, if you were about to be born, and were faced with the 0.1% likelihood of being born into impossible riches or the 60% chance of being born into utter poverty with high chance of childhood death—well, you'd want to choose a policy that remedied this inequality, no? Fair is fair.
  • Investment taxes: again, Clinton levels. Capital markets exist to facilitate financing for companies. How antiquated this notion is today, an era in which the stock market and investments are merely wealth-acquisition tools manipulated by the wealthiest people and trading houses, far removed from what they were intended to be in pure capitalist ideology.

Too bad the site doesn't provide more options for reforming defense spending. That's the real boondoggle. DoD can't even pass a fucking audit.

Can't be the only one who's noticed this. (Left is the surfer from Guinness's Surfer commercial, and right is Peter Fonda, from 12 Angry men.)

This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. The rest of the site has some pretty neat gadgets as well.

Red got me these from Shapeways for my birthday: http://www.shapeways.com/model/126266/thorn_dice_set_with_decader.html?gid=mg
That looks rad! And expensive!    Not sure if Red's that rich, but this goes to show that love is like being a monk: "to hell with money, it's just me and mah beloved!"

I'm considering opening a shop at Shapeways. But first I need to activate my Paypal.  :o
