What is the most exciting, tense etc. game ever, in your opinion? Basically, if you wish to know the criteria for such a game (because not everyone think like I do), think of Ninja Gaiden, Silent Hill or Resident Evil 4.

Speaking of residing evils, Resident Evil 4 is definetely on the top of my list. Sure, it isn't as scary as some of the other ones, but it creates a new theme for Resident Evil: tesion. From the moment you begin, you realize you can't move with your weapon aiming. The enemy has its eye set on you, with it's will to kill you set higher than it's will for survival. Shooting them in the head doesn't always instantly kill them.

Just walking around in the dark creates fear, as you never know what will pop up. Once, I entered a house and I saw this women with her axe coming down on me. Scared the hell out of me. Well, no, it didn't, but that is just because I don't get scared very easily.

Bosses are just amazing. From trailing a giant Leviathan type beast and trying to shoot it with harpoons, to killing a massive beast thingy that can use trees as weapons, you will always be on your toes to use the environment in your favour (I admit, I'm not very far through). But so far, the most exhilirating level was the time when I was in the cottage, and zombies were just pouring in. I had no herbs, so I had to kill to get them. Finally, I realized that Luis called me upstairs...

So, there ya go. Resident Evil 4 rocks.

Oh, right, and the main character, Leon S. Kennedy...and Ada

Next would be Ninja Gaiden. I love it. It is hard. I have finished it. Yep. Finished. Plus, it is known as one of the best action games of all time, and the best action game for Xbox. I should probably play DMC or DMC3.

Ah, shit. Tough. I would have to say a tie between Parasite Eve and Silent Hill.

Am I allowed to go outside the survival horror genre? I think Gradius III for the SNES is the grittiest game I've ever played. The action, the incredibly powerful music, the provocative background art, the guy who shouts "Missiles!" at you when you get the missiles, etc, etc. I know it's not the same as stuff like Silent Hill, but it's still very gritty, tense, and utterly thrilling. Just a different kind of grit...

Well, you sorta answered your own question just there.

When it comes to gritty, I also quite like Metal Gear Solid 3. But then again, gritty isn't the main theme that should be in a game listed here. Tension is what I'm mainly looking for, and that is where Survival Horror comes in.

Resident Evil Nemesis is always a scary one for me. OMG I sound like a 5 yr old. But it's still horrifying. Especially when Nemesis rip the fat guys gut off.

I played RE4, too, and it's is very breathtaking(not scary, though), just think of the Mercenary Mode, or whenever these Chainsaw enemys come...You just here the noise and you are like "Shit, I better get out of here".

Quote
You enter the centre of the village, and before you move on, you look around. There is a Tower, but it would be more a trap than a hiding, and there are a few roofs and buildings, one even has 2 levels. There is a barn, some chickens and even a cow. You come closer and see the one of the 2 police men who drove you there burning on some kind of pyre. They spot you, and before try an attack, you rush to the 2 leveld building. After closing the door and pushing a frame infront if it, you have a few second of relaxing.
"What the hell is going on here?" you ask yourself, but before you have time to think about it, you hear this Doctor with his Chainsaw coming along, as well as some villagers breaking the windows and trying to enter. You spot a shotgun upstairs "This might be useful" and while you run up, the Doc crushes the door and you hear some spanish talking. "Ok, I need to get ride of the Chainsaw Man as fast as possible" The Doc enters, and you use one of your Flamer-Nades on him and he burns and falls down. "Eat that!" and after firing a salve of shotgun shells against the lying enemy, he stopps moving. To bad the villagers already entered through the window. A few axes are thrown at you, easiely contered with the knife. "So, I better get out of here" And with a evil Smile, you use the pistol and, by shooting the enemys legs, youwalk to the wndow. "A window, I better jump out of it even if a normal Human would break his bones" and you do so. "Time for some laming" You spot the blood seeking villagers and you let them bow for you. "Nownow, who has to be scared?" You rush over to them and knife them until they die. "Muhahaha..." Finally, the bell of the church rang, and all villagers dissappeard in it.
"Hah, leaving already?".

I love this game :D to bad my first cd doesn't work anymore after the you kill the right hand :(

Scary, when I was younger, was Silent Hill 1. I have been I think 12 or something, mostly because the controlling was a bit hard IMO, but all this psycho stuff is really cool. Haven't played it for ages, though.

I love RE4 so much. It's the perfect blend action and horror. It really is just about flawless speaking in the sense of modern gaming. I mean really, no way it's as flawless as CT, but that's a completely different game and time. However, creepiest game would have to be Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, or RE1.

Personaly I think Geometry Wars fits the bill. That's a tough game.

I can't wait to be insulted

If Geometry Wars counts, then I'm voting for Galaga. I mean, that game gets tough at later levels (around 50; and yes, I can get that far with one quarter). It's so intense, the enemies shooting everywhere and trying to kamikaze and stuff... I don't know what you guys think but I think that it's pretty intense.

Parasite Eve. Very very fun game. I was like 'OMG MITOCHONDRIA BOOM FIRE' the entire game. And in the Ultimate Being chase scene on Day 6, I was like 'RUN BITCH RUN LOLZ MITOCHONDRIA BOOM'. And the chariot scene, mein Gott, the chariot scene.

God of War. That game was insane. Catch a zombie, tear him apart with your bare hands. Or fling him at his friends. Or petrify him with Medusa's gaze.  It wasn't really deep, but it was action packed and so very very fun.

RE4 is a killer game... Have you guy try the professional mode? I heard that it will take 2 hits to kill you.

I think it was 4 hits with max. HP, but at the beginning, yeah, 2 hits(or maybe 3) might fit, yet with some practice they won't hit you in most cases(tactic and dodging, baby)

All Metal Gears, Resident Evil 1(back in the day...) and 4, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Fatal Frame 3(the only one I played), Silent Hill 1,3 and 4, Devil May Cry 3 (c'mon, the pace of this game is insane, not to mention the presence of VERGIL and his fucking Yamato), all Legacy of Kain games (I know, they are very easy but VERY thrilling =]), Warcraft 3 and probably more which I can't remember in this FREAKING cold morning, my brain is frozen
