Who is King Zeal?

The retranslation confirms that Schala and Janus are brother and sister, unlike the US version of the game, which alleges they're step-siblings.

Obviously they're hiding something.  We cannot confirm our assumptions until Kato himself explain the story & background of King Zeal.  Seriously, I wish Kato write a prequel of Chrono Trigger before & during the death of King Zeal.

Perhaps Queen Zeal is not Schala's mother? Janus seems to have more traits of the Queen, and Schala doesn't. From what I remember at least. Maybe they have the same father?

I don't think knowing about King Zeal even matters. Janus and Schala never in the game compare Zeal to him and heck, Queen Zeal raised Zeal from her sorrow (the jap version is going more towards the fact that seeing that her husband died, she doesn't want to die either, hence the whole Mammon Machine - Lavos immortality thing happens).

Well, I believe that King Zeal wasn't there in order to further express Janus' loneliness. You'd expect one of the parents to support him while the other is crazy, and leaving just the crazy one just leaves Janus with his only friend, Alfador. Without his father, Janus was a more emotional character, which could've led to him becoming more corrupt, having only a corrupt parent left...

W/e. King Zeal can stay dead for all I care. If he was in the way, Zeal probably wouldn't have prospered as much as it did. And if he was still alive, then Schala wouldn't have had to have been Janus' mentor pretty much, or like his one dearest family member who he would search time and space to find again.
Besides that, I always reckoned that Melchior and Belthasar looked after Janus and Schala as children. Belthasar wouldn't have such a longing for Zeal and Schala and all if that wasn't true, and Melchior jumped infront of the gate to save Janus.

Maybe we retranslated it wrong, who knows. We need proof, and not something retranslated by fans. Like the creator saying it.
