Pft. Just another case of activist judges putting the Constitution over the Republican Party. This kind of shit only emboldens the terrorists. If al Qaeda flies an airplane into your house tomorrow, you'll know why.

Should the law have ultimate power? For example, if you have nothing to hide, then why not be forced to give a DNA sample, unless of course they need blood and for some reason you can't give it. I dunno. There are a lot of cases in which you think, police should have more powers.

But that's not my total view, though. It's a really topsy turvey topic.

Should the law have ultimate power?

Yes. This concept is called the "rule of law" and is the underpinning of modern civilization. However, the law's absoluteness is not in regards to its reach in our everyday lives but rather to its sovereignty.

For example, if you have nothing to hide, then why not be forced to give a DNA sample, unless of course they need blood and for some reason you can't give it.

You're asking a loaded question. Fortunately, there's a pithy little legal truism in the United States that unhinges your crazy premise for the bunk that it is: Public opinion notwithstanding, an individual in tihs country is innocent until proven guilty. Having nothing to hide most certainly does not abrogate their rights under the law.

Kerazy. Does anyone else want a pina colada?

Then again, the US (well, most countries for that matter, but I wouldn't watch a Law & Order: Uganda either) has a pretty bullshit law system where detectives and police can bend the law to get evidence or anything for that matter on the edge of being illegal.

Other stupid laws are things like how if you go to rob someones house, and you fall off the roof due to a loose tile, you can sue them. Or in a more horrific case, McConnel versus R 1977 NSWLR 714, where three men kicked, beat, and stabbed a man, and thinking they had killed him threw him in the river. The dude wasn't dead, however, and he died for drowing. The three men were found of not having the intention to kill, so weren't charged with murder.

Now doesn't that suck?

I'm assuming they have a chance of winning the appeal under the packed Supreme Court?

I'm not too concerned. If I want to communicate with someone without the government listening in, then there are plenty of better ways to do it than calling them over the telephone.

OMG, he can reads mind?

Anyway I don't mind wiretapping as long as for national security.  Although, its unconstitutional but it's part of national security against terrorism & this is one way to prevent a second 9/11 or other such act of terrorism.

Those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither.

Why not? It's not like they wiretap every single phone. What they need, however, is greater cause to suspect.

That said, the whole idea of the Patriot Act and other sorts of security measures are quite creepy. I mean, isn't that what people hate Stalin and other dictator's for?

Zeality is quoting Benjamin Franklin. He's right, although I don't think there is a zero-sum situation between liberty and safety.
