The Animals of Farthing Wood
« on: September 15, 2006, 07:35:56 am »
We all have those shows we watched as kids. Those shows we will never forget. For me, one of them is Power Rangers. Other I didn't remember so well. I gained up every last memory of them and went a-googling. One of them was Widget The World Watcher, a cartoon I liked so much before I used to go to the library to try and find it, but to no avail. It was pretty cool, about some purple shit that could shapeshift, and used his powers for good, not for evil. You can check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widget_the_World_Watcher

But one of the other ones was much more special, the Animals of Farthing Wood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animals_of_Farthing_Wood). After googling "forest badger toad fox" I found it, and quickly wikid it. Good, good memories. Basically, the plot revolves around animals who's forest is being paved over, so they go to find a place called White Deer Park. Now, this is a big group of animals, of all kinds, so they make a pact to put aside instinctual feelings and try and protect each other. But this isn't some happy story, it is quite sad and moving. Many of the characters you grow to love die, like when the snake eats the toad. Or something like that. But remember, it is all about survival.

I don't know if it was just when I was a kid, and my ignorance then created this sensation, but this was one of those great, moving, epic television series that I never want to forget.

I doubt anyone outside Australia or England has, but has anyone else heard of/watched this? Discuss.

Yeah...I only watched kick ass things when I was a kid...Although I watched the Power Rangers second incarnation when their robots were dragons...because dragons are cool! They totally effed up when they went ninja, oddly enough...You can't be goodie two shoes ninjas! That's just not right.

Shows That Rocked (80s)

Transformers (the oldschool one) - Soundwave is the SHIT!
He-Man & the Masters of the Universe (the oldschool one) - I had so many of the toys...Skeletor's voice never fails to crack me up.
G.I. Joe (again, oldschool) - It's all about Snake Eyes...I remember playing one of the games in the arcade...Ah, good times...

Shows That Rocked (90s)

The Animaniacs - They were the Marx Brothers only for kids! And plenty of innuendo (half of which I'm sure I didn't understand)!
Pinky & the Brain - The first cartoon spin-off that I had ever seen. It took one of the best parts of The Animaniacs and made it it's own show! If only they had spun off "Good Idea, Bad Idea"...lol
Eek! The Cat - Oh, it was such a good show...Eek & Sharky were like that time's Tom & Jerry or Sylvester & Tweety...
The Thunderlizards - Another cartoon spin-off (from Eek! The Cat) that was pretty funny...The humans were always funny.
Ren & Stimpy - There's so much innuendo in this cartoon that I still don't get some of it...It wasn't just funny, but it had it's own unique style that made the really gross close ups stick in your mind years after the fact.
The Tick - No, not that stupid version w/real people in costumes, the awesome animated show based on the awesome comic book...It was the ultimate super-hero spoof.
Transformers: Beast Wars - Yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking...why the fuck are you listing that crappy CGI Transformers spin-off? Because Dinobot was the MAN. The whole Golden Disk arc is byfar one of the best storylines in Transformers history...I didn't like much of what went on in the series after Dinobot died...even though they sorta brought him back in Beast Machines...IS NO ONE'S DEATH SACRED!?!?
Space Ghost: Coast to Coast - Has there ever been a better late night talk show? Conan comes close, but the very idea of SG: CtC is amazing in itself since the material they were using was so limiting (I think there was only, like, one or two small seasons of Space Ghost's old tv show). It was a hilarious concept that was done extremely well.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 - It's not a cartoon (it had puppets though!), but I'll be damned if I don't list one of the best shows of all time...It pretty much shaped all of my concepts of sarcasm in comedy...and it made me a loudmouth asshole in class whenever we watched a film! Ah, good times...

I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of them right now...I'd list Red Dwarf, but that isn't in the same catagory at all, huh...I would also list the Simpsons, but man, looking back at the first couple seasons I wonder, how the hell did I watch that show? I guess my sense of humor has changed...Other shows deserve to be up there, but are more recent favs like Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Futurama...not to mention anime...

Wait, how did Dinobot sorta come back in Beast Machines...? I remember nothing of the sort.  And yeah, he was the MAN. So was Silverbolt...for a while, until he got all lovey-dovey...which isn't right for a machine guy.

Oh, I remember the whole Golden Disk shit!!! It was good stuff, indeed.

I'm pretty sure Dinobot came back as something or other because it really ticked me off...although they did that w/pretty much every character from Beast Wars so perhaps I'm actually thinking of something else...But I think he came back and then shortly after they killed him...oh hell, I'll wiki it...

Dinobot died after destroying Megatron's Golden Disk, and saving the protohumans (and therefore the entire human race) from an attack from the Predacons. Dinobot's weapons were a sword resembling a spinal chord, and a rotating tail shield, as well as Laser Eyes. Several clones of Dinobot were made by Megatron during the series. Later in the series, Megatron creates a clone of him with the transmetal 2 alien driver and half the spark of Rampage. Dinobot was scheduled to return in the defunct Transtech show.

Ahhhhh....That's what it was...Now I remember...he was all jacked up and Terminator looking...lol

Yeah, that was random humor done right. Some pretty talented people were involved with its production. Also, the Ricardo Montalban cameo was too good to be true.

No Ninja Turtles on any of those lists? When I was REALLY young, I watched Astro Boy.

TMNT Comic>Any other piece of shit TMNT thing ever produced

And speaking of anime/manga-inspired robot little boys...

Other Shows That Rocked (90's)

Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot - Yeah, that's right. A boy robot who's hero is actually just a guy in a mech. Based on the comics...Which I have no real experience w/except for an awesome lithograph of Big Guy stopping a missile or something...*shrugs*
Sam & Max: Freelance Police - Maybe you're more familiar w/the computer game, but Sam & Max were the height of irreverent, bizzare humor...

I just realized how many of these great cartoons FOX had...and then they all just sorta dissapeared w/hardly any seasons behind them...and yet there is somehow still Power Rangers and King of the Hill...

Beast Wars was an excellent series. I still have the DVDs. I think the only episode that made me tear was "Code of Hero".

I always thought Megatron was almost obsessed with Dinobot. "Double Dinobot", "Cutting Edge", and "Feral Scream" as well as other referances, Megatron really has an infatuation with his beast form.

As for Beast Machines, I only watched the first couple episodes. How was the series?

Quite good. I've seen most of the episodes, and the idea of a war between organics and machines is cool. Maybe I'll download some episodes and watch them again...
