National Novel Writing Month 2006: What Say You?
« on: October 25, 2006, 05:58:02 am »
It is a little-known but oft-surmised fact on the Compendium that I am something of a writer. The drivel that I type around here is just one tributary leading to an incredible river of written output that, thanks to the immortality of electronic digitization, will surely outlive me and probably the whole planet. It is therefore with cosmic relief that most of my writing is more interesting than may be apparent around here. In my finer moments, I write essays, letters, and fiction.

Fiction is what brings me here tonight. The holy month of NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, is fast drawing upon us, and the time has come for all able-handed purveyors of imaginative fancy to consider the sole imperative of NaNoWriMo: Write a book.

In the month of November, NaNoWriMo tasks budding novelists to compose a work of not less than 50,000 words—roughly 90 pages in Microsoft Word with typical fonts and margins—in the 30 days or less before that month comes to a close.

The rationale is simple: We all have a story bouncing around in our heads, but for one reason or another most of us never get around to writing it. NaNoWriMo gives us an excuse to unambiguously dedicate time out of our days toward bringing this story into being. Especially important is to allow ourselves to toss quality out the window and focus exclusively on quantity. By devoting all ambition toward reaching the 50,000 word finish line, we can at least be sure of completing November with a new and substantial piece of writing to our name. And if this story turns out horrible? That’s what the other 11 months in the year are for.

You know it well, from firsthand experience, each one of you: You have begun to write something, getting only a few pages into it before becoming dissatisfied and going back to start over, then finally losing interest altogether. Only a few of us have actually finished a story of especial length. None of us have finished every single piece of written work we ever seriously began, excepting those of you who have never begun a serious piece of work at all.

The number of participants in NaNoWriMo has burgeoned since the contest’s inception several years ago, and now a great many people look forward to November as their opportunity to seriously pursue the call of the imagination. Here is your chance to bring your own story to life.

I will be participating, of course. It will be my fourth year. NaNoWriMo is beneficial for me because I usually focus so heavily on quality in my fiction that writing for quantity is an important release. It gives me a chance to work on other, less important fiction, and to get further along with it more quickly. As it was said in Finding Forrester, “Just write.”

I invite our Compendium’s entire company to do just that. Work together, or on your own. Work in secrecy, or report daily. The choice is yours, and the opportunity is near.

I've had a couple of friends who've tried this.  Their quality of writing noticeably improved as a result.

I don't think I personally have the right frame of mind to do this, though.  I'm completely anal about internal consistency in fiction, and I'd just be pissed off at myself after it was over, because something would inevitably have slipped through the cracks.

I'm too focused on writing quality poetry thanks to a contest at my university. I am going to win that sucker and smack down all who believe that normal-looking prose with line breaks automatically equals poetry.

It may be hard to believe, given my typo ridden posts here, and the nonsensical crap that manages to find its way on my 1up.com blog page (which I've noticed none of you have ever bothered to visit.  For shame, Compendium), but I used to be a pretty good writer.  I had a natural talent for the craft.  Allowing that talent to atrophy and die is my greatest, and possibly only, regret in life.  Thus far.  I'm still pretty young, and I'm sure I’ll make tons of mistakes that I’ll regret later with this kid who keeps calling me daddy running around.

But what the hell.  If quality isn’t the goal, maybe that will take some of edge off.  Everything I start always sounds so freaking weak that I grow to disgusted with myself to finish it.

I'm guessing fanfiction doesn’t count.  I still have the outline for the Dipolis War floating around this hard drive somewhere...

I have read your blog on a couple occassions, actually. Not sure how you'd keep track of that, though.

Fanfiction absolutely counts.

Sweet.  Though I've decided not to go with the Dipolis War.  That story requires a level of quality and attention to detail that seems at odds with the goals and spirit of NaNoWriMo.

Instead, I'm going to go with another piece of fan fiction that’s been rattling about in my head for over a decade now.

Final Fantasy VI: The Last Flower.

FFVI is one of the only RPGs that gives Chrono Trigger a run for its money in my book. I'll be interested to hear more about your story as it unfolds, or once it's finished, depending on how you like to operate.

I'll agree with you there, Lord J. I only played it something like a year ago, but found it a pretty darn good game. Good characters. FFVII's Tifa has nothing on Celes.

I read a good one on Fanfiction.net about Cyan trying to repair Doma and eventually suffering the same fate as Belthasar in the ruined future. Pretty interesting.

Let me work on it for a week or so, then I'll probably gab about it some over in the NaNoWriMo forums, maybe post a little excerpt.

Though fans of the game might be bit disappointed as most of the main characters wont be featured in staring roles this time around. The story will focus mostly on the first post-Kefka generation, with the child of Duane and Katarin as the "main" character.

My gods, this post is like 121 worlds long!  That’s 121 words that should have gone to my novel’s total!  WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING?!

Tifa has nothing on Celes.

Quoted for truth.  Celes is one of the select few returning stars.

I've decided to join the fray. I'd been hesitant to do so, because I don't like having more than one active writing project going on at once, but my existing project is far enough along, and this new one so spur of the moment, that I don't think that it'll be a problem.

It's an original, based on a preamble (to nothing) I wrote back when I was in college. In accordance with the rules (and my having lost that sheet of paper) I'm not copying that preamble, but it is the thematic precursor.

The "preamble to nothing." It has a very Kafkaesque ring to it. Er...Kefkaesque. Good luck, Dreamer!
