All the things I look for in a game actually! A good plot filled with well developed character and coupled with wonderful music, all draped around a gameplay system thats shear joy to use and a sense of humour thats, frankly, rather refreshing when compared the overy serious RPG's that seem to have flooded the genre of recent. Whats not to love?

One of the first things that intrigued me was seeing the clip of the Frog Squash being performed in Magus' Castle in the original commercial (this was 4th grade for me).  Then my friend who had recently gotten the game told me about the whole time traveling theme and some of the story, and at that point I knew I had to check it out.  It was my very first RPG, so I had to get used to the whole menu/turn based order of business, but once I did, man, everything just compelled me.  The character/monster designs, the bold coloring, the Tech system, the intriguing story, and the staggering replay value thanks to the multiple endings.  I was obsessed, for well over a year.  I still think the character designs in CT are some of the best in the video game world today, perhaps rivaled only by FFVII (and that's a big "perhaps").

Chrono Trigger was the second RPG I ever played, Earthbound was the first. The story, the characters, the gameplay are ALL top-notch. I cannot think of any RPG that comes close to CT in terms of overall incredibility. It's the ultimate game.

What made CT so great?

1. Direction
2. Plot
3. Music
4. Gato
5. Zeal

Music, story, graphics, I think it was the combination of all these stuff that made CT what it is. Final Fantasy VI is longer, Seiken Densetsu 3 has better graphics, Xenogears has a nice story... but CT has the perfect combination of everything.

Also, gameplay-wise there's something which is not often mentioned but which is pure genius: the dungeons are short. They're not boring because they're short. When they're a little longer, they have small story or comical scenes to entertain the player (the NPCs in Magus' Castle, the random Kilwala in Denadoro, the cats in Tyrano's Lair, even Azala's throne in the Giant's Claw which can be used, etc).

That's the reason why CT is hailed as one of the best RPG in SNES(If not, Best RPG of all time) even in today's standard.

I think it's not that simple. The Secret of Mana has well-paced dungeons that are even shorter than CT's, but few would call it the better of the two games.

The better questions to ask is "What DIDN'T CT have?"

I think the emotional storyline is what did it for me among other things. I have played through CT more times than I can count and I STILL get a little teary watching the GOOD ending with the Chrono and Marle and the balloons.

Music was also phenomenal too. The main theme song still gets my blood pumping.

CT will forever be my favorite game of all time.
