Layman's Guide To Compendium Terms & Abbrevs
« on: August 22, 2004, 06:24:34 am »
I also thought 'Layman's Guide/Dictionary To Common Compendium Terms, Phrases, & Abbreviations'...But whatever, you get the general idea...

It's just an idea I've been kicking around in the ol' brain box. I know that not everyone out there even knows what a 'compendium' is, much less an axiom or a temporal distortion...Not to mention such abbreviations as RD, DoT (or it's sister: TD), DBT, etc...

So, basically, I'm proposing a compelation of such commonly used Compendium phrases for the use of the 'layman' who may not know wtf is going on or what people are talking about. I also propose that it be somewhat lighthearted where possible, and maybe even a joke definition thrown in just for kicks (perhaps member name definitions or something equally silly), but mainly that it be as similar to a dictionary as possible, although the key would be to clear things up for those unfamiliar with the terms.

I imagine such a thing to be mainly a group effort, as I'm sure I don't even KNOW all of the terms used throughout the Compendium. I think this would be a great resource/reference guide to possible outsiders to the whole heavy introspectiveness of the Compendium. Either way, I think it'd be fun.

Well, personally I don't see the need for such a compellation. A lot of these phrases you can figure out from reading the article, and I really don't think we use that many distinct abbreviations here anyway.

Also, that would be a more difficult venture than one might think right offhand. For example, consider the DBT. How do would you "define" that? People debate whether it exists for every timeline or if there's only one. A lot of these "definitions" deal with topics that we still theorize about.

Maybe it would be nice to have a "master thread" in which links to good threads on number of topics are posted. That would aid readers in finding information on an exact subject they're looking for - but then again, isn't that the goal of the encyclopedia? I haven't scoured through that much yet. (Posts have been more than enough in my free time, thank you.  :o )

I figured that anything theoretical would be defined as such and links to information would be given where necessary/needed.

Firstly for the DBT, the most obvious thing would be to tell what the letters stand for, and then give a brief list of possible definitions, ie how some words in a dictionary may have multiple defintions, then, if further explanation can be procured through articles or the like, links to those would thusly be provided.

This sounds like a good idea; at least as it pertains to abbreviations. For most terms, the encyclopedia already serves this purpose (or will). Then again, maybe there should be a "dictionary" section of the encyclopedia which will give short definitions for those who don't want to read through all the theories behind certain terms.

For instance, the "DBT" entry might say:
Darkness Beyond Time: a catch-all for locations outside the existing timelines.
