Several key elections tonight, and all of them went our way! Two big surprises for me: Halter is competitive against Lincoln in Arkansas and will have a runoff with her in the coming weeks, and, in Pennsylvania, Sestak beat Specter in the Democratic primary. Poor Arlen Specter; he's actually a pretty decent person, and he's been through a lot of personal suffering what with his cancer, and he's been a reliable Democratic vote ever since he switched parties. But I think he deserved defeat tonight. He had a good run in politics, and now Admiral Sestak has the chance to prove that he can be a great Democrat.

I was just offered a fellowship at the University where I will be working on my PhD. As I am known to say, "holy crap in a basket" that's awesome and a great relief.

Gasp! This can mean one of three things...

1.) Thought will be conducting research at a prestigious university
2.) Thought will be a p-p-p-Prof(!) at a prestigious university
3.) Thought has been selected to accompany Frodo to Mordor!

But, hey, you'll be getting paid for it, right? Kudos!

Mordor? Well I did recently purchase a fun song about Mordor, but alas, no (or is that “fortunately, no”?).

Josh, in defense of my innate conservativism, I will be working for the funds. Though even that is a boon, as it will give much needed and desired teaching experience. The history of tomorrow starts today! (... that sounds like something you'd hear at Disneyland)

I love perspective. It's hard to have too much perspective. Not impossible, but hard.

Hmm... I am inherently skeptical of any list of "most important historical figures" in which Guttenberg isn't in the top three. The moveable type printing press is one of the greatest inventions in human history; it ranks with the likes of the invention of the written language itself (and written language ranks above the invention of any form of mathematics).

I'm sure he's on the list. It was only showing the top 10. Tesla better be on there as well.

Gutenberg was #8.

As for Tesla... hard to say where he should be. He was brilliant, but the question is how much his ideas and inventions affected the rest of the world; to my understanding (which, since this is modern history, is comparatively limited), he was quite insular.

Which reminds me of the time that Captain Kirk stood alongside Abraham Lincoln to fight evil:
