There's something really amazing about the album "Reanimation". Linkin Park on its own can never do something this special -- they had help from countless independent/underground music artists, and they were... radical!

This genre... Nu Metal, Industrial Metal, Synth Rock, whatever it's called... it's got class! And yet nobody seems to go for it. Does anybody recommend any music like this?

Because I feel like I'm no longer alive... as if I've been tossed into an endless dream!

I wish Rick Rubin hadn't killed Linkin Park. For what it was, they were the best at that type of thing. Nowadays, Mike Shinoda can't get a word in edgewise and the songs are all whiny soft emo pieces.

Ah, didn't know "Bangladesh" could be a person's name. o.o" The term "Bangladesh" is a merge of Bangla and Desh, which means "Nation of Bangla/Bengal".

I'm not sure who Rick Rubin is, and though I agree a lot of their recent songs suck, but there are pretty awesome ones too. XD

Ah, it isn't used that way in reality, I think. She's a character from Girl Genius.

Rick Rubin is a famous American music producer; he produced Johnny Cash's last six albums (two or three of which were posthumous). While he's generally good, with Linkin Park, he just ruined them... He took over after Meteora, which is why everything from Minutes to Midnight on is so different and worse. Put Hybrid Theory in and it's like a completely different band.

True, I've outgrown Pokemon already (although I still like the games, I abhor the anime), but Blaziken is one Pokemon that I can never seem to forget, mainly because it was the very first I ever chose (by accident; Torchic is useless, and it frustrated me) and it was... radical! This was the kinda creature that looked like a friggin God of Fire, with speed and power so intense it seemed to belong to a whole other story, such as Final Fantasy or some breath-taking anime. Blaziken was like Bruce Lee having his Fire-Element invoked with Spekkio's help and was ready to Blaze-Kick some ass!

But sadly, the reference to animal slavery-and-Gladiator-ism ruined that aspect for me.   As much as I'd like to think, Blaziken just isn't The Chosen One in any proper story.

Also, is it just me or does it look like the Egyptian God Seth?

I generally don't pay much attention to song lyrics, but these really hit home.  They're just so... relevant to the troubled times we're living in.  It seems to me a thinly veiled and poetic warning to the leaders of the United States of the direction the country is heading.

But since this is supposed to be a thread about things we love...

I saw a live Professional Bull Riding (PBR) event tonight.  I've never seen a show quite like it.  Not exactly a rodeo, just thirty-some cowboys trying to stay on a bull for eight seconds and not get killed.  Sound boring?  It's not.  The bulls usually win, so it's really exciting when one of the riders makes it the full eight seconds.  One of the bulls was so onery inside the gate that a reride flag had to be thrown so the rider could try another bull.  The bull was so out of control it had to be let riderless out of the gate and lassoed by a horseman to get it back into its pen.  That was a bit scary, but fun to watch.

The movie Agora is altogether excruciating, in the best possible way. It's a eulogy to Alexandria, and although it's incredibly inaccurate and unfair on certain crucial points*, it's exhaustively beautiful.

If there were any doubt that the first or second thing I'd do with a time machine is go there straightaway, it's quite annihilated**. They had the most epic library of the era and they knew how to throw a party.

* Specifically to Christianity, and the fact that they made Hypatia an atheist (she was a Neoplatonist). The value doesn't lie in the many distortions of the proselytizing plot, but in the aesthetics, which are accurate.
** The other option would be late 19th century Paris!

I just realized that the opening theme of Kiki's Delivery Service is a spiritual successor to "Monster Mash." Using various '50s rock rhythms, it captured the ghoulish imagery of "Monster Mash" without any melodic similarity at all.

On a related note, I re-watched Kiki's Delivery Service a few days ago and it made a much more meaningful impression on me than it did the first time I saw it, in 2009. It seems to be the most "real" of all Miyazaki's movies. Brilliant, to use a delivery service as an excuse to tour the town.

One of the things I love about his movies is that many of them are a "most" something. Laputa has the most epic plot. Totoro has the most childlike wonderment. Porco Rosso has the most pathos. Spirited Away is the most fantastical. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind has the most compelling main character (and possibly my favorite female character of all time outside my own writing). Howl's Moving Castle has the most complicated villains. Ponyo has the most ham. =)
