Chrono Crossovers
« on: March 28, 2007, 07:38:59 pm »
While recently watching the intro FMV for Front Mission 4, I noticed a store sign in the background that said, "Behold Zeal" and got to thinking, damn, Square likes to make references in their games of their other games, right? So why not make a list for such things? We all know about Lucca in Xenogears, so let's get crackin!

I've just seen it on YouTube, it's nice! Apart from Xenogears and Front Mission 4, the only reference I can think of is the one in Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime:

Really? What about weapons names? Or locations or anything? Nothing?? Not even a stray Nu or Poyozo? What the funk, Square...

It's not specific to Chrono but Mitsuda said on some soundtrack's liner notes that there's a "music box" theme in every game made by Kato and he. I've never heard any music from that cheap weird game called Deep Labyrinth though, so I don't know if that statement is still valid nowadays...

Anyway, I can think of two other games crossing over to Chrono. There's one crossover in terms of location names: Gaia's Navel from Secret of Mana.

There's another one which is quite intriguing. According to some interview on the Compendium, before Chrono Trigger Masato Kato worked on the first three platform games of the Ninja Gaiden series (on the NES). Interestingly, there's a character in that series, Irene Lew, whose codename for the CIA is "Sea Swallow." Interesting eh?

That is interesting... Sea Swallow and Irene, eh... Perhaps the latter sharing a link with Cross' mermaid lady?

There are two guards called Gram and Leon in Baten Kaitos. I have no idea what they do and what they look like but it's definitely a nod to Gran and Leon (Masa and Mune).

Wow, I never noticed that. Gram and Leon are very minor characters that appear at the beginning of the game and fight a monster. I can't remember what they look like, though. I recall that you can visit their wives at some point and receive two pieces of armour from them, so perhaps the armour has a reference in its name? I'll check next time I can.

Thats the intro to the game, I think V meant the video that plays on the main menu when idle.

At the end of Baten Kaitos (spoilers, beware), there's a very important character (Melodia) who merges with the main antagonist, a monster, Malpercio. After being freed by Kalas from Malpercio, it happens that Melodia, originally white-haired, was blue-haired.
Obviously a reference to Schala in my opinion (the change of course, not the blue-haired thing).

Baten Kaitos may not be a SE game but you know that Masato Kato was the scenario writer of the first episode (not sure about Origins though).

I don't know how much some of these similarities are actually "references"...

Yeah it might not be a direct reference, but it's definitely a sign of Kato doing the story. Like how there's a time crash in Children of Mana:
