Square Enix - New Games
« on: May 09, 2007, 01:32:56 pm »
Well, for the FF 20th anniversary, Square Enix seem to be pulling out game after game. Crazy, no? It's unbelievable how many projects they have, and this isn't even the end of them!

FFIV. Remake. 3D. I'm melting and swooning as I look at this. FFIV is one of my favourites, and I honestly can't wait for this:

And an FF fighting game of some sort. I kid you not. It seems to have old FF characters, and from the four shown there, I can name Garland (from FFI), and Zidane and Kuja (from FFIX):

And in other news, SE have also announced a new Star Ocean. If you haven't played this series, I recommend going and finding a copy of one of the games now; they're honestly just as good as any Final Fantasy game, in my opinion.

It's too early to judge for real but... the character designs are weird. Big head and small feet... And what's up with Golbez (in the logo) looking like Exdeath?

Dissidia: Final Fantasy. I feared the worst when I saw "characters from all the FF games" and "character designer: Tetsuya Nomura", but I must say the result is pretty neat actually. The faces look definitely Nomura-ish, but overall the characters are very faithful to the original designs.

The Last Remnant

An original RPG, aimed at both Japanese and American audiences (there are two different main characters), with emphasis on war-like battle with up to 70 enemies at once and a battle system with QTE elements (think Squall's Renzokuken or Auron's Overdrives). This game, its storyline, and its character design all look badass. Out of all these new games announced, The Last Remnant is the one I'm looking forward to the most.

Chrono99, thanks for that. I had heard of the Last Remnant, but not international. Awesome.

FFIV- I have never played this, but it is supposedly excellent- I have not heard a single criticism of it aside from some slowdown. The graphics looks gorgeous, and if they can retain the updated "Advance" gameplay and add some more features and levels it will be the best FF remake yet.

Dissidia- Nice. I am reserving judgment until I see gameplay videos or hear details, but it sounds intriguing at the very least. Maybe we will see some Chrono characters thrown in too? After all, I would not put it past Square Enix to add a few DQ characters in- so why not Chrono, too?

FFXII International- Meh. I have not even completed the original yet, but the grindings a pain. I love the sound of the more traditional job system too.

Last Remnant- Kickass. Awesome. Bloody brilliant. I am loving the designs- even "The Conqueror" is not as cheesy as I thought he would look, and the gameplay is everything that massive battle system from the Lost Odyssey demo could have been but was not.

Sorry if my wording seems slightly unnatural. The apostrophe key is broken, so I cannot say words like "cant" with there proper grammar- so I prefer to simply say "cannot", which seems to me to be unnatural.

I'm glad that FFIV is getting a 3D remake as it's a great game that deserves it and it gives hope for FFVI and, dare I say it, Chrono Trigger! Well, *fingers crossed* anyways...But I don't know how I feel about Cecil's new Viewtiful Joe look...

Square trying fighting games on their own again? I don't know how I feel about that either...But I'd like to see the roster...Hope it's a big'un and hope it doesn't suck balls like their last attempt...

As for Star Ocean...I loved the 16-Bit one, but as it's the only one I've played I can't say much for the series...Though it was easily one of the best RPGs/games of it's era, which is saying a lot since it had some stiff competition. I hear nothing but good things about the others of the series as well (my next PS2 buy will probably be Til the End of Time). It's always good to see them getting behind their other series, if ya know what I mean.

EDIT: Hey, I just read over at FFI that Dissidia isn't a Fighting game, but what they call a 'progressive action game' (fancy wording for a mission-based action game, a la Dirge of Cerberus)...So yeah, maybe it WILL be better then they're last attept at a fighting game...

Zidane and Kuja are in the lower screenshots on the fighting game. That could be interesting.

Yeah, so far, it seems to be more an action game than a fighting game. Square Enix's wording is "Dramatic Progressive Action". Well, all we know for sure is that it won't be an RPG.

Chaos (from FF1) and Cosmos (from Xenosa... er, no, a new character) will appear respectively as the god of darkness and goddess of light. This could mean that there will be some kind of storyline, or this could mean that these two gods will just be pretexts for the other characters to fight one another (good guys vs. bad guys, etc.).

Anyway, FFIV is being made by Matrix Software and the new Star Ocean will probably be made by tri-Ace... I wish Square Enix could outsource a new Chrono to Monolith Soft.

FF IV was a great game, but I'd actually like to see a sequel made to it, or maybe a FF VIII-2 or any one of the others.

I am definitely looking forward to The Last Remnant as well...it's nice to finally see a new, original RPG instead of more Final Fantasy games...though of course a new Chrono would be even more welcome. Alas...

Well, it's not like Square Enix never tried. They did try to launch a whole new franchise with Code Age in 2005, with Code Age Commanders on PS2, Code Age Brawls on mobile phones, and the comic books Code Age Archives. The Last Remnant kind of reminds me of it in that it's a whole new game with a new fictional world and original designs... I'm not sure whether Code Age was a failure or something, but it never got out of Japan (can't barely find any information about it). Apparently this time Square Enix is aiming at both Japanese and American players at once.

Good. It would be poor form for them to ignore their North American audience at this point...the amount of money they make in North America with all of their games--especially the Kingdom Hearts series, which sells a lot more in North America than it does in Japan--is astounding.

Quote from: Automatic translation from Nifty
"The message to the development staff"

The message board to the development staff was prepared beside 20th anniversary Booth of FF, and everybody, the visitor, was writing the comment each in his own way as if he left today's commemoration.

The opinion which wishes the remake of FFVII too when it sees rapidly is runaway.

I wish that board were invaded with messages for Chrono Break instead of those for an FFVII remake. There are some nice ones though; I can spot a "Remake Xenogears and make it better than PS version" in plain English.

EDIT: Other games announced:

* Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess - new expansion to celebrate FFXI's 5th birthday; rumors say it will allow travelling into Vana'diel's past

* Chocobo's Dungeon: Labyrinth of Forgotten Time - new Chocobo dungeon-crawler to celebrate the Chocobo series' 10th birthday

* The 3rd Birthday - a Parasite Eve game for mobile phone, still unclear whether it's a sequel or remake
