Interesting thing about CT's instruments...
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:33:20 am »
I was messing with the instruments in Chrono Trigger, and decided to put a song on complete Silence. Well, I turned on the rom (i set the song to play when i load up the rom and have a message up so the game won't go to the title screen)

Strange enough, after a few seconds of silence, the song plays in a weird way.

I think the Ocean Palace actually use the Silence as an instrument in it with the weird sound in the song.

I beleave this is called "Square Rape" where Square made the silence channel to actually produce sound.

What channel and sample byte did you use?  The only way to accurately silence out an instrument/channel/sample is to basically import a blanked sample (BRR).  And, byte values 00-1F are used for sine/saw/square/triangle and etc type "instrument" waveforms just incase you decided to change the sample to something along the lines of "DC00" instead of "DC20".  Or at least that is my interpretation.
