Character Battle Seeding & Pitch

If you've been to Gamefaqs, you know they love to do huge tournaments involving games or characters; they're total popularity contests and are the most heavily-hit polls. Having one of our own would be a great attraction, and the event could be sensationalized to increase hits. However, we need to seed the characters, and possibly determine if any excess Cross characters should be left out.

I've had experience seeding such things before. I'd be willing to bet that Magus is the top seed, or most likely person to win. At the other spectrum is Korcha.

But we shouldn't start yet; what do you think about this?

After the editoral on our favourite characters, I think it would a good idea to hold off on such a poll - but its something to think about doing in the future.

Yeah, it'd be sort of redundant if we put them out at the same time.  But in a couple of months, it would be great!!

Definitely a good idea, I know that whenever I see one I vote. Using all of the characters from both Trigger and Cross could take a while and would produce interesting results.

Overall, do you think people like CT characters more, or CC characters more?

Yeah, I suppose CT has an unfair advantage. Perhaps we can incorporate some NPCs into the mix to balance them out numerically, and just have separate leagues.

These are always fun, but like you said it would be more of a popularity contest than anything else. If you wanted it to be in the realm of a 1 on 1 fighting kind of thing, you would want to point that out, but it would still most likely be popularity.

I just noticed this. I think it's a great idea, but I also think maybe there should be separate leagues. There are, what, 44 Cross characters? I'm thinking we could put 12 important or popular characters in a league with the Trigger characters, and make a separate, 32-character bracket with the leftovers. Then, we put in, say, some amount of NPCs from Chrono Trigger, and fill the rest of the Trigger/Best of Cross bracket out with the winner and some of the runners-up of the Cross Leftovers bracket. For example, 12 top playable Cross characters plus seven playable Trigger characters equals 19, plus, say, nine NPCs from Trigger and the Final Four of the Leftovers. Or something similar to this. I think this could be a summer event to rival GameFAQs' if done really well.

That's a neat idea. Leagues could be formed according to character affiliation with places or people. We should perhaps get this going when the new site launches. I'll think about dividing them up.

We'll have our own little selection committee and everything.

I would say I've been watching too much March Madness, except that this is the first time in two or three years that I haven't really paid much attention to the NCAA tourney.

I, for one, am fairly bleh on the subject...I'm all for the favorite character polls. But one of those damned GameFAQs polls? That's one of the main things I hate about that place...

For one, it normally attracts the wrong crowd. Now, I know that moderation in the Compendium is very good, I still have nightmares about the times I've been in GameFAQs during their little 'battle polls' where every other thread was about it and no matter how hard I tried, I still didn't care whether Mario or Link (or whoever) was winning when I was in a Chrono board...

Since we know it's a popularity contest, I think we shouldn't dress it up as anything but. And we've already done Chrono Trigger and we're currently doing Chrono Cross...add in Radical Dreamers...then do a cross of the top two or three (or just the top one from RD) from all of the games and be done with it, I say....

But, then again, I'm sure the Compendium will do a much better job than any sloppy jollopy piece of crap GameFAQs is currently doing...

We should definetly have a seeded NCAA basketball toruney style bracketing system. That would make the most sense and be easiest to make. I know I wouldn't wanna see Frog versus Magus in the first round, and then see like Pierre versus Macha in another.

You KNOW Magus would end up winning...
T-T

Not that I'm saying it is a bad idea or anything... I'm all for it!

Why? There are those that like the knight Sir Glenn, you know. And mighty Crono is not much less liked than that fabled sorcerer. After all, while the wizard might win in a battle of wits, in battle-cunning, deftness of hand and in the skill of weaponry, though Janus is quite the master, Crono outmatches him - even the sigaldry of Janus cannot contend against the holy magic of the prince of time. And even if the dark one's strength was greater than Crono's... he lacks the patience to strike when the timing is best, and his wrath and pride turn his power against him. Think even in weaponry - why does Janus use a scythe? Fear and power, but it is not a good weapon, not nearly so good as a falchion-blade. Though, mythically speaking, I think it would be more apt if it were Crono that bore the sickle, as his namesake did, but that is a different matter...
Yes, I am speaking in battle-skill, I know that well enough. But even as far as character goes, Crono is not at a full disadvantage. If those that like Janus only for his superficial, seemingly 'cool', darkness, could be swayed, the scales would tip decidedly in Crono's favour.

Since when does Magus have no patience? Not only did he wait out a lot of the Guardia/Mystic war to have his chance against Lavos, but he also waiting in the wings when he was sent back to Zeal...No patience? The man is pure patience!

He was cool because he had goals and he stuck to his guns, not just because of his look, his cool magic, and his weapon. Where Crono was the hero, Magus was the anti-hero.
