Crimson Echoes character portraits -- the CE Team wants YOUR feedback!

Hiya everybody! I've seen questions recently inquiring as to the status of Crimson Echoes. So first off, I'll use this opportunity to lay any fears to rest -- CE isn't just alive and kicking, it is flourishing. I've had the privilege of viewing the project's inner workings but I'm not a member of the CE team and I've done my best to avoid spoilers up to now, so unfortunately I won't be able to answer specific questions regarding what to expect or when it will be released.

BUT -- I have offered my services in the creation of a portrait patch for CE, and the team and I would like fan input into the arts to be used. Currently, we're defaulting to CuteLucca art, mostly from her Final Tech series with the exception of the Crono portrait. Here's some samples of what to expect should we go through with the current plan:



These Crono and Magus samples have already been palette-reduced to match SNES technical specs, so this will give you all some idea as to how the final portraits would appear in-game:

Now -- what arts would you all like to see as character portraits for Crimson Echoes? Or are these all spot-on?

well, pretty much my extent for fanart knowledge ends with cute lucca (or a google search of CHRONO "INSERT CHARACTER NAME HERE")...

as much as i love cutelucca's art, i dunno how i feel about those being the character portraits.  lucca looks sort of mischeviously demented there.  and looking through the pics at cutelucca's page, none of the "final attack" pictures seem fitting.

it's okay if you DO use them, though, i just feel like there might be better.  if you DO use them, i humbly request you DON'T use marle's.  hers is just sort of...

I'm going to take a look at whatever non-ninja, colored, Marle fanarts are out there, as well as for Lucca. There are some CuteLucca arts for Lucca that are really awesome, but they're in pencil. My only beef with the Flare Final Tech is that Lucca seems to be lacking one eye due to the glare on her glasses. When the face is taken out of its original context, it looks a bit strange.

EDIT: Oh, hoh-hoh! Some artists like to color each other's work. Here's Marle art originally done by CuteLucca in pencil and subsequently colored by anniefellis. Just an example of what's out there:

If anyone happens to come across interesting arts of the main CT cast, please do drop a link here. It doesn't matter what the style is -- I want to see everything. Uh, as long as it's not hentai. I presume we would direct people to the original arts from which the portraits are taken upon release of Crimson Echoes, so hentai is politically unfeasible.

The lighting in that Ayla pic seems a little harsh...very dark...I almost couldn't even tell who it was at first...

The Frog's ok, I guess...I'm not too enamored w/the style of it though...

Personally, I like the Marle. It has a definite, girly anime quality to it that I think more than suits her character.

I like the Lucca one, but perhaps it would be best to use a pic w/better lighting so that you do see both of her eyes...

The Robo's cool, but I think I'd rather see it w/o the lightning if used as a status pic...

That colored CuteLucca pic of Marle is nice too, but I don't like the face as much as the first one...

That Marle by plangkye is nice, but since Marle's wearing a different outfit in it, it might look kind of off as a status pic...

Anyways, for any of the 'guys', I've always liked this pic by Goldenboy...



I dun like his pic of Marle very much tho, btw...

Alya and Lucca look evil-ish, but Robo finally got what he deserves the bad ass treatment.

You need a better marle pic than those, and the ayla one isn't bad but come on you find better.

Hmm, now I'm interested in that Robo in the pic V posted. But I think CuteLucca's Robo wins out with his awesome shocky thing going on. As far as palette reduction is concerned, the Crono in that pic would be quite doable I think -- depends on what "mood" everyone wants Crono in. Looks like he's about to pull out a can of whoopass right there on the spot. Frog's a little too bug-eyed for my personal taste, but again it's doable if people happen to like that style better.

By all means, if anyone has examples of better art, do what V has done (or just throw up a link). It's incredibly helpful.

I could get two to four sample portraits for each character, and we can have runoff elections! Democracy shall carry the day.

Oh, *that*'s right, I remember seeing that. Is it from the CT PSX anime cutscenes, where she and Lucca are casting Antipode?

I recognize the coolness factor of the CuteLucca Robo, but it doesn't seem right to show him using his final Tech (or w/e the lightning's supposed to represent) in a status pic to me...*shrugs* I think status pics should be fairly simple & straightforward representations of the character...

Yeah, I guess I can see the 'bug-eye' quality of the Golden Boy pic of Frog...but I think the CuteLucca one's eye doesn't look big enough...? I also just don't like the snout-ness in his face in that pic, I think...

That status pic or w/e that Vehek just posted is kind of on the blue-side...and it's a little too tight on her face, don't ya think?

I always liked that pic of Crono when I've seen it as an avy...Speaking of which, here's a bunch of avys I found a long time ago of Crono...ranging from kind of lame to kind of cool, I guess...All from official art, the anime cut scenes, and the first one's a slightly modified official art source, I belive...As you can see, they're angelfire, so it's just links (angelfire's still a lil bitch about that, right?)...

I always thought the expression on Ayla in that pic was cute...and Crono's expression is priceless as well.

The Compendium's got better qualities of both of those scene pics, but I just wanted to quickly show them.

Also, what about the possibility of using images from either Resurrection or Remake Project? Or are 3D pics out of the question? Might make it better/cooler, eh? idk...*shrugs* Just an idea...I don't have any handy, but I'm sure there's a bunch on Google or w/e, right? Why doesn't the Compendium have any? Or are there? I wasn't exactly thorough in my search of possibilities...

I prefer using Fan pics because:

a) This is ultimately a game by the fans for the fans.  It is meant to expand on the Chrono universe but also a showcase of what fans are capable of doing.

b)  Copyright issues.

Well about the pictures... they all look good except Marle... she looks kinda weird... It's the face and the hair that is messed up.

Excellent, excellent. If official art is out, then that means the anime cutscene pics are off limits too, right?

I do think the purpose of this thread should be to highlight some of the best fanarts for the characters in existence, then we could take polls. It could be a "portrait of the week" kinda thing, perhaps...
