A Nu Adventure
« on: January 15, 2005, 09:26:14 pm »
I've entered a contest over at Tek Hacks (http://tekhacks.net/board/).  Everyone that entered has 2 weeks to make the best game edit they can with the game of their choice. I, of course, chose Chrono Trigger. :)
I haven't really released anything in awhile, besides a boss fight or two, so I thought I'd shake off some of my rust, and see where my imagination could take me (and, I must admit, I like competition, even if I lose).

Day 1: Almost playable Nu character, replacing Crono.

Like another universe, out of an infinite number of variations of possible universes, this one will be similar, yet different.  The people will be replaced by Nu of different colors, and the enemies will be replaced by assorted people and NPC's from Chrono Trigger. My hack (hopefully) will be a short hack, taking the new character through a new millenial fair event, and maybe a bit more. I REALLY wanted to do Slash Flea and Ozzie (my favorite characters) but they will have to wait for right now.

Just thought I'd show some screenies every now and then of my progress, and release it here upon the contest's completion.

So far, this little project, and even just this one day of working on it, has really kicked me out of my lazy streak that winter tends to bog me down with (spring fever something feirce I tell you! ;) ).

Oh, and for those in the know, I plan on having a cameo appearance by none other than Nuumamonja! Gwa ha ha!

Can't help but ask if you're sticking a Prerelease gem in there somewhere. I've been reminding myself to ask you or Peer if you guys think an FF6-type Coliseum, where you bet items, gold, etc. and fight duels would ever be possible. This ought to be interesting; how do the guys over there decide who wins the contest?

The coliseum should be easy enough to do. Perhaps, like the Dednaro (spelling?) mountains, the consecutive battles across the multiple screens.
The coliseum could be set up that way, battle, move the characters over a screen, battle, move, battle, move, BOSS BATTLE, celebrate, gain items, money, fame, fortune, etc...

Use the event editing creatively.
After each battle, write a unique value to memory somewhere. After the battles are won, or lost, have the event check for those bytes, and give items or money accordingly. The battles against the preset monster groups would be of increasing difficulty, and a boss at the end, down a long coliseum hallway, or connecting rooms.

Have a couple of identical locations, but different enemy sets.
So, you would have, say, 7 maps that look exactly the same.
The event would look at Crono's level in memory, and load the proper location, according to his level. Small level = the location with the easy monsters. High level = the location with 15 lavos spawns, 9 Magus', 2 Queen Zeals, and a Spekkio. >_>     Or something. :)

That all came from the top of me head, and I think that was pretty creative. You could probably improve on the ideas, and tweak it to perfection, or change it all completely to suit your needs for some type of coliseum (which really is a great idea!).

I don't think I'll have time to put one in my hack, I plan on spending the most time on making a fully playable new character, with a new portrait, and palette, etc....

I may find time to toss in some prerelease stuff, though.

There will be a Poll over at Tek, for an unnoficial 'Popular Vote' and a judges panel for the 'Official Vote' for the winner. So there will be 2 winners at most, and everyone will have their hacks displayed in one thread, with screenshots, so everyone is really a winner, and have their work shown to everyone.

Impressive... And using a Nu is just a very nice thing, since I've always loved those mysterious creatures... *Bows downto the power of Temporal Flux*

I too, have always loved the cute, mysterious blue round creatures that enjoy a good scratching.
My mini hack will begin and end with Nu...  heh

I haven't touched it with Temporal Flux yet though. To get my Nu a playable character, I used Peer Sprite Viewer to decompress Nu's graphics, a Hex Editor to copy and paste the entire thing direcly over Crono's graphics, and Chrono Tweaker to change the Sprite Assembly data accordingly. It's easier than it sounds, took me only 30 minutes to do, and some of that was spent downloading a better hex editor.

I found the palettes for the Portraits in the menu screens.
They start at offset : 003F2180
Directly after the graphics for the portraits.

Here are the now easily edited portraits in Tile Molester, that I will be soon modifying.

Is that in an unheadered rom? I got what looks like some text when I went to that offset. I'm going to attempt to change up the portraits for Crimson Echoes using TM.

I messed up the offset. (I was looking at one address, and wrote down another... >_>)
Try :$3F1D80 for unheadered
Try :$3F1F80  for headered

I'm not sure what the order is for the palettes, but I'm pretty sure thats where they are.

Also, check out each and every option in Tile Molester. There are options to save any selection to a picture file, and also to paste from a picture file (make sure that it's 16 colors ;) ), making it Uber easy to edit any graphic in Paint, or something to perfection, and literally paste it into the ROM. Then, all you have to do is edit the palettes and such. Have you edited games before CT, or are you learning to romhack through CT? Do you feel you are getting better? Are you having fun doing it? Just a few questions for anyone here, just curious is all. :)

Sweetness; I'll try to get in the new portraits then. My experience prior to CT and the Compendium lies in hex-editing an SMRPG savestate (with a guide, of course) and...well, that's it. I feel like I did something related to the Sonic 2 Beta, but I think it's wishful thinking. I did hack a few GS codes for gscentral.com's n64 section, but yeah, pretty easy stuff.

Edit: I think I found them, but they seem to be a little out of order or something. I haven't tried to edit the palette yet or do anything else.

My palette offsets were correct, the 4th palette is Crono's, which kind of confused me, as I was wondering why my changes werent taking effect.
The offsets for the portraits are in Evil Peer's Offsets.txt, and right after is the palette info, which he just didn't have labeled, I came to find out. I'll email him so he can update it.
If you look in tile molester, the palettes take up exactly 1 tile each. So, changing palettes in TM is as easy as draging the tile and replacing it with another!
I'll have my completed replaced portrait for Nu in about 10 minutes, and I'll post a little screenie.

Is that txt file in the Juicy CT Hacking Folder? I lost it awhile ago and haven't asked for another copy simply out of lack of needing it yet. I do have his Offsets guide, but yeah, it simply lists the entire range of offsets as Menu Graphics. Bleah, sorry for all the trouble.

Geiger always keeps his latest version of it up at his site. I'll look for the link to it, and edit this post and link to it. It is a handy document indeed.

---edit---
By the way, it's no trouble at all, I enjoy hacking Chrono Trigger, and love helping other hack it too. I'm glad I'm not the only one hacking it, so I am all too eager to help in any way I can, or when I have time. ;)

Hm, just wondering -- did Peer change his name to Geiger? I could have a search and replace done for every instance of Evil Peer in the Encyclopedia.

Yes, at the 1st of this year, he decided that he would change his name to Geiger. New homepage name, new nickname, new tool names (once they get their first official updates anyway), etc.

All I could find was

3F0000   3F1F7F   GFX   No   No   Character menu portraits   5/1/2003

Is this the key?
