Dwarf Fortress

This is one of the most addicting games I have found to date. It is ascii, and has a really steep learning curve, but once you pass that, it feels better to play than any 3D rts.

You set up your "fortress" however you want, but you need to have your dwarves gather wood, build beds, doors and other furniture, mine, farm, enlist in the military, etc... This game is more complex than anything I have ever seen, and it manages to get it all together in a fun way.

The game is programed by a single guy, and is always being updated, with developments being shown on the website.

You can get it with these graphics, but it isn't at the very latest version.

The game generates worlds like the one below, with about 36,000,000 individual tiles, each one part of a group that makes up a viewable part in the map.

Not memory leaks. At least not anymore. World generation dropped from 500MB ram usage to 200.
The game just uses a huge amount of resources because of what it does.
