I have to agree with you there. I disliked the large character cast in the game. The only characters I absolutely loved were Serge, Lynx and Kid. The three were very deep characters, and I wished that the game focused a bit more on the three. I wish SE could cut out the other completely useless and random characters, like everyone except Glenn, Harle, the people in affiliation with General Viper and Viper Manor, and maybe Fargo and Steena.
If they cut down all the random characters, you'll find yourself with a much better game. Less characters = more character development.
Part of the beauty of Cross is that you don't have to deal with any characters other than Serge, Kid, Lynx, and Harle. Everyone else is minor/optional. Even Kid is optional, for most of the game. If you want the game to focus on the core cast, just use the core cast. If you think taking Nikki and Pierre around is cool, then you can. You're not forced into using characters you don't like. (Unless of course, you don't like Serge. But who doesn't like him?)
I just hate the fact that those random characters take away the time that I would like invested in the main crew.
I wouldn't really mind having those optional characters, I just wish that the main characters had more development.
I know that there is already a lot, but I believe that they need more attention.
Sounds like your problem is with the story, not with the large cast.

Serge still expressed emotion. Like at viper manor, when Kid gets injured, or when Kid gets stabbed.

I don't know if I'd call either instances emotion...reactions, maybe...The poisoning all he does is gesture in the direction that Lynx threw the knife...Then when she later gets stabbed by Dark Serge he's in Lynx's form and does his little roar thing...I always thought it was both from confusion & him seeing his previous dream come true...and regardless, this is two scenes in the entirety of the adventure where fuct up things are happening to him almost constantly and he just barely reacts...Whoo-hoo...at least Crono had a fuggin surprised sprite.

Doesn't he speak at the Temporal Vortex, the weird place with Harle and Sprigg?
There could always be more, but despite the fact that he didn't talk, he still has a deep involvement in the plot. :)

Being a part of the plot and actually being involved in the plot are two different things. Serge was just sorta there and everyone else told us about his past. Also, I don't recall Serge saying anything of import ever...and even when he did it was usually a choice between, "yes" & "no", like Crono...

I've also said before that history=/=character development.

Now RD Serge, there was a well developed character...but I guess it's hard not to be when you narrate the whole game, huh?

So basically you're saying the Chrono "surprised" sprite is better then Serge screaming out in anger and desperateness when seeing his friend getting stabbed? Sorry, but I don't follow your logic. You're saying Serge isn't involved at all and Chrono is better then him. Well Chrono was even less involved then him. Nobody often asks him questions and obviously he doesn't talk. And that surprised sprite is really nothing special as well. It's a cheap way of showing a reaction, definitely not an emotion either.

You're taking this too defensively, how would they show Crono screaming out in anger? With a sprite. How did they show Crono surprised. With a surprised sprite.

Crono doesn't have as much of a history as Serge, I'll give you that, and the resources for CT and the resources for CC weren't exactly the same, so without dialog they don't have the same ability to convey emotion. But if you think that Serge had better character development that's fine, personally, I thought that they developed at about the same rate. Both had their heroic feats. Serge, however, did have a deeper story and was a bit more tragic overall, but he and Crono progressed at basically the same rate.

Emotion doesn't mean character. History doesn't mean character. Action means character: it's the action the characters take that represent their character. Crono chose to go save Marle, Serge had the option to save Kidd when she was poisoned, but his "quest" was simply one he was thrust into.

That's not really true either. After you save Kid she asks you if you're going back to Home world and forget about everything that's happened and lead a peaceful life, or continue and find out more about what's going on. Sure if you wanna continue playing you need to pick the 2nd option, but it's the same with Chrono Trigger

First of all: I am watching Chrono Cross by Azure mage 253 and just past Vipor Mansion!                 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCdSrboff5c

2nd I hope they make a remake but I am not sure of the capability's of the DS.  I think it will be dumbed down on it and the instruments will be all midi as Nintendo DS can't do realistic music......as far as I know.

I think the game is cool though it shouldn't really be called CHRONO cross as it doesn't have anything to do with him.    I don't believe in calling it Chrono as you might as well slap a new name on and it will still be good due to the original game-play.     There will be nothing different if it wasn't called Chrono     Just like Mario Kart using bikes substituting karts but that's another story.

Chrono Cross is the sequel to Chrono Trigger. Please don't forget this. You fight the same enemy that appeared in Chrono Trigger. You meet some of the same people you met in Chrono Trigger. You even see the protagonists from Chrono Trigger. Just because it has a different setting and protagonist doesn't mean it's not the sequel to Chrono Trigger.

On a side note, I have the Chrono Cross FMV's on my flash card on my DS, and they play pretty good. Slightly worse quality then when played on the PSX, but this shouldn't bother anyone.

Actually, I wasn't really comparing the two...I didn't bring that up...

I can mostly agree with that except that I don't understand why some people feel like lumping in Serge with the good to moderately developed members of the CC cast...Deep? He's far from it. Crono was a deeper character than Serge, and that's saying absolutely nothing at all (fitting, no?)...

That is what I said. Serge isn't a good or moderately well developed member of the CC cast is what I was saying. And yes, Crono's surprised sprite, which he uses several times over the course of his adventure outweighs Serge's one time of pseudo-expression.

How can you call Chrono a deep character really? Because of that surprised sprite? That doesn't really make him deep...

That was sort of the point...I was saying he was more than Serge, but that that wasn't really saying anything...i.e. they both really aren't deep at all.

Aye, they're not really all that developed, in my opinion. Now, you might disagree here, but for a character to develop he should probably go through a character arc: the character should develop morally as the story progresses and show changes in thought, etc. Now, perhaps both Crono and Serge do this, it's pretty hard to tell when they're silent protagonists. So the question here would be, do you feel that Serge (or Crono, for that matter) displayed a clear change as he progressed through the game?

Also, this has so much to do with the possibility of a CC remake.

Yeah he changes into Lynx[/sarcasm]

Nah I honestly don't know. I guess ofcourse he changes after all he's been through. You gotta imagine he lived all his life in Arni peacefully and then at one point whoop he's in another dimension and everything is different, and after a while it turns out it's up to him to restore everything. But yeah it's hard with silent protagonists. He in fact does talk; this is evidenced when Leena responds to him at the very end of Chrono Cross. It's just that we don't see it. This is the only canon I hope Square will change, that they make the protagonists talk.

As for Chrono, I don't have the feeling he really changes. Same as with Serge, he obviously changes a little bit after he finds out he needs to rescue the world. Chrono presumably talks as well, as in Chrono Trigger too, his party members sometimes respond to him. And let's not forget the ending where he actually does talk.

Right, he changes after the events, as did Crono, presumably. But what proves character development, in my opinion, is progression of character as influenced by progression of events or storyline. For instance, if Serge chooses not to save Kidd and she's upset at him for doing so, we should hope that if he has the option to save someone again, he'd do it.

I agree with you though, giving Serge (or Crono) some dialog would really show them develop with the story.

And yes, let's all remember the beloved words echoed by Crono in that one ending with that little slide-show.

I don't think it is a problem that our hero never talks. The heros also never talk in Dragon Quest series...

But they do in Final Fantasy. And Kingdom Hearts. Silent protagonists are just stupid, unless the developer intents him to be you. While I can understand this point of view, it's just not suited for the Chrono series.
