Dalton (Post-DS Revision) [DS Spoilers Included]
« on: December 05, 2008, 01:05:35 am »
I know that in some of the analysis that it was said that Dalton was likely, or at least possible, to be the character who aided in the Fall of Guardia.

In the DS version we find out that he, in fact, was relegated to the Dimensional Vortex (Or was it Lost Sanctum? I'm pretty certain it was the Vortex). Should we assume that these new areas are, in fact, canonical in regards to Dalton's fate after falling into the spatial distortion in 12,000 B.C.? If so, any thoughts/possibilities on who may have been the character wielding the Masamune in 1005 A.D. during the Fall of Guardia?

This has already been pretty thoroughly discussed in the CTDS forum.

I didn't see it listed anywhere. Which thread was it discussed?

Nothing wrong with a general discussion of Dalton here I guess. Starcore, do check out the Chrono Trigger DS forum though -- it's right at the top of the forum list. If you don't see a thread addressing Dalton specifically and want to go more in-depth with an examination of the evidence in CT:DS, I can move this thread up there if you like.

Well, I had sifted through the topic listing in the CT:DS forum but didn't see any topics about that. On the play-thru I remember Dalton saying some stuff in the DV but didn't remember anything specific that mentioned the Fall of Guardia or alluded to it...but that could just me slipping slowly into senility.

It's your call, Faust, if you want to move the topic or not, it's not a huge deal to me. I was just curious about it.

After you defeat him he says something along the lines of "I'm going to raise an army in Porre and crush your Kingdom of Guardia!".

I don't know what party you used to fight him, but I wonder if he doesn't say it if you don't use a party containing either Crono, Marle, or Lucca???

Which era was he in? 1000 A.D.? If so, I think my party was Crono, Frog and Magus. I may simply have forgotten that he said that, though, it's entirely possible.

Well, I always keep Lucca in my party.

It makes perfect sense. Not for nothing, but does anyone remember how easy it was to bust out of prison with Crono at the beginning of the game? Dalton could have wiped out most of Guardia's forces by himself. If he raised a massive army on top of that, it doesn't surprise me that he was able to conquer the kingdom...unless he defeated Crono and Marle, too. Then that's bullshit.

Don't doubt him, remember after the fall of Zeal he knocks out the party then moves them to the Blackbird. If he does get them by surprise he is powerful enough to defeat Marle and Chrono.

Hmm yeah indeed I think Dalton is certainly capable enough, as I've stated numerous times. If he could defeat Chrono and Marle, doubtful, but possible I think. Yes they are strong, but so is Dalton.

Let me just sum up what I think are his strong points, just so it's clear:

- He has influence and is competent
When Chrono & Co arrived in Zeal it was clear that Dalton had been in charge of the militia there for a long time. That must mean he does his job well and knows how to hold influence and intimidation on people. Also strongly seen when he takes Schala. I thought that was a very cool moment with Dalton. Furthermore, in the construction of the Ocean Palace, he was the one that kept all the Earthbound slaves in a row.

- He has knowledge
He watches over the Blackbird when Chrono arrives, and it's also said he was the man that oversaw the construction of the Ocean Palace. In addition, he recognized the Epoch immediately as Belthasar's creation and engineered wings and lasers on it, and he could control it quite well.

- He is strong
Dalton has many strengths in combat as well. He can summon at least two Golems at once, and probably more. Imagine what Guardia soldiers could do when he just summons five Golems at a time. They would be outmatched already. He can also summon a Golem Overlord and knows strong magic spells, like Luminaire.

That pic pretty much confirms that Dalton was responsible for the rise of Porre and the Fall of Guardia. I can't see how he'd not know the LV 3 spells (Luminaire, Flare, and Dark Matter) in the Epoch Battle, since I remember Crono learning Luminaire just before the Ocean Palace (I remember a run in which he learned it after pwning Dalton in Zeal's Throne Room) so why not use it in the Epoch Battle?

Maybe he was sucked into that black time gate before he could complete the spell.

I dunno if you even actually played the battle with Dalton atop the Epoch, but it was not a time portal. It was a Golem portal, and he was about to summon Golem Overlord, not cast Luminaire.

I don't know where you get the idea that he knew Luminaire back then. If he did, he would have used it. What, if Chrono learns a spell Dalton learns it automatically at the same time? Obviously he learned it later. And while it looks the same as Luminaire, it has a different name as well. Plasma, if I recall.

Ah, you are right, he was summoning Golem Overlord, now I remember it...
