Okay, I understand.  It's the original Melchior who always arrive in 1000AD, every 1000 AD.
So Magus is not the only one who remember the original incident, and his case is not special.

That's pretty much it, though there is one difference:  The Magus we have in our party recalls all of the incidents the way they happened the first time around, including no memories of the Black Omen existing in 600AD.  Melchior/Belthasar/Gaspar, the way we knew them when we first met them, are not the same.  They will always recall the Black Omen existing in their respective time periods.

So,  we always see Magus A1, not Magus A2.
But we see Melchior/Belthasar/Gaspar A2 - because their gates open after the world has changed.
Their "A1" counterparts aren't TB'ed, they are just sent to the DBT with the rest of the timeline where the Black Omen never existed/other changes.
All  "B"  counterparts are TB'ed, of course.

How do you figure?  During the course of Chrono Trigger, we meet all A1 versions of the Gurus.  When you first start the game and are collecting Silver Points, Melchior A1 is hanging out in Leene Square.  When you first see Belthasar programming Poyozo Dolls, that's Belthasar A1.  The first time you go to the End of Time, you meet Gaspar A1.  The Black Omen is not yet present in any of these time periods.

Once you go back in time to 12000 BC, you meet Melchior B1 there, and could meet Gaspar B1 and Belthasar B1 as well, though we don't see them.  You're correct that all the B1 versions are TB'ed, along with Janus B1 (we assume).

Now, if you go back to the future (Marty!), you will meet Melchior A2 (A2 meaning after the New Ocean Palace incident - truthfully by this time, we're probably on Melchior A2396) in 1000 AD and Belthasar A2 has since "died" and programmed a Nu to help you in 2300 AD.  I don't think Gaspar ever gets to an A2 version, since we're not sure in what dimension / time line the End of Time operates.  If it is only on Time Error, than nothing Crono and Co. do to the current timeline effects it, so Gaspar is still Gaspar A1.

The Magus that joing Crono and Co. is Janus A1.  We see Janus B1 at the same time that we see Melchior B1.  Janus A2 appears in 600 AD with the Black Omen overhead and is TB'ed at the time when Crono and Co. originally defeated Magus at his lair, and they were all thrown into a gate.

I know...  All I said was that the gurus that we see post ocean palace incident aren't the same ones we meet the first time around.

It becomes complicated assigning letters and numbers to past versions of time travellers after multiple alterations to the timeline.

(A2 meaning after the New Ocean Palace incident - truthfully by this time, we're probably on Melchior A2396) in 1000 AD

Pretty much. Every instance of time travel would add on to Melchior A1. Technically on version A2396 of Crono's Mom too  :D. Here's a thinker - every time Crono and co. travel to 2300 A.D., Crono's mom would have to live out her entire life and die alone wondering what happened to her son. Same goes for Melchior.

In Time Travel everyone gets screwed except for the most current time travellers themselves.

Really? I guess there are cases where the time traveler is the one who screws himself.

Yeah I was more referring to the effects of time travel on everyone else in the timeline except for the time travellers (since they have immunity).

But technically, Crono and co.'s actions do indeed screw them over in the end since they led directly to the fall of Guardia and possibly their own deaths.

Yeah - and therein lies something truly funny.  If Crono and Co. never time travel at all, would Lavos destroy the planet?  The answer is that we don't know, because that future in 2300AD that Crono and Co. saw is a future without them in 1000 AD, because they left there and went to the future.  Who knows?  Maybe if they'd have just stayed put in 1000 AD, Crono and Marle would've hooked up and has some super kids that had more kids, and by the time their ancestors were alive in 1999 and Lavos rose, he would just get whooped by some kid that can cast a wicked combination of Ice 2 and Luminaire.

I guess what I'm saying is "What if Crono and Co. CAUSED the apocalypse, because they left 1000 AD?"  We'll never know....

Because of the dimensional split, only one copy (Another World's) of the Crono team save the future.  Home World is left for dead.  Since Crono and Co.  end up back in their own time anyway, we see that their presence doesn't stop Lavos from destroying Home World.  Also, the events of Chrono Trigger happen after the planet inserts the gates into the various time periods while it is remembering its life.  So the first time around, Crono and Marle would have tried the telepod - with no gate travel - and regardless of what happened, the planet was dying post 2300AD anyway due to Lavos.  Still, it would be funny if thats what happened   :D

However, the Fall of Guardia issue is an interesting point....

Home World doesn't prove that Crono's presence doesn't stop Lavos, since Crono's actions caused the Fall of Guardia, in which Crono is presumably killed.  So, post 1005, Crono isn't there in that timeline either.

And, how do we know the planet was dying post 2300 AD because of Lavos - we only ever see 2300 with Crono there....

(this theory is ridiculous btw - I just like stirring the pot with this...  :D)

Oh my god, it gave me a crazy, and funny theory :
Lavos is the entity. Of course, he did not try to stop himself. He wanted to negate the existence, of the powerful ancestor of Crono and Marle, that threatened him in the future. It worked, the ancestor of Crono ceased to exist. Alas, instead, it was Crono and Marle, that came to kick is ass in person.

Craziest theory ever!
