Ladies And Gentlemen, We Have A Wiki

IDK who does or doesn't know about this site, but I just recently discovered it.

http://chrono.wikia.com/

Good stuff.

EDIT: Fixed the link.

The Encyclopedia's a wiki too (runs on MediaWiki, just like Wikipedia) -- but closed to public editing these days. Usually the lack of ads and the completeness of the content in our wiki keeps the competition from trying too hard though.

So the correct title is, "Ladies and Gentlemen, We Have ANOTHER Wiki."

We've had wikis...I'm preferential to the Compendium's encyclopedia personally, but wiki format is always nice. We should frequent that wiki too though, add some articles and write some decent information for 'em. Hell, they don't even have a Nu article. :(

All it takes is a change of the default theme and a switch to public editing mode, and our wiki is exactly the same as Wikipedia (it runs the same software). Is that what people want or not? I always ask, but I don't get any answer.

Private fansites / Wikis will do it better than Wikia every single time because of one reason:

Copyright.

We can have as many images and as much content as we want. Wikia can't, because everything has to be fair use.

Ah, well. BTW, I noticed that they quoted us in that site.

So do we want to open up and Wikipedia-fy the Encyclopedia again or not?

I say no.

I linked it in case no one knew about it.

Definitely not. We all know the wave of bullshit edits we'd get from trolls.

As often as I'd like to correct a typo or rewrite a sentence, opening it up may not be the best idea. A search-bar may be nice, but I think the encyclopedia trumps any wiki I've seen, in my opinion.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of theories and analysis on the pages.  For instance, analysis on the Mammon Machine could be on the Mammon Machine page (instead of having to look elsewhere in the site).

I don't know how possible implementing that would be, however.

The amount of text copied verbatim from the Compendium encyclopedia appears to be significant. Good examples are the Organizations, Peoples, and Species articles. A lot of these pages can be traced back to a user named Dede-11. I don't see much in the way of attribution, either.

To be fair, they do also have some original (or at least different) articles.

Definitely not. We all know the wave of bullshit edits we'd get from trolls.

That's easy to avoid: keep an eye on RecentChanges, require that people register for Encyclopedia accounts to edit pages, and ban anyone who trashes anything.

All changes are stored anyway (you can check the revision history for every page back to the moment it was created), and we can also lock controversial pages for Encyclopedia admin/sysop editing only.

So there's really not a whole lot to be afraid of. The only question is whether or not you want to see a toolbar on the side with editing, history, talk page, etc. etc. options.
