Over here in NC, we don't get much during winter. Worst we got is freezing rain and frost in the morning. We barely ever get snow.

Over HERE in SD, we barely get freezing rain, and NEVER frost. Definitely no snow.

You live in Texas too mav? I don't suppose your name is a reference to the dallas Mavericks? I imagine someone from Canada would follow hockey if they moved down here. I live north of Dallas.
I live right in the Dallas metroplex, but my username's a reference to an old username which was in turn a reference to Mega Man. But, yes, I do follow the Mavs from time to time--but I focus a wee bit more on hockey--I'm an Ottawa man, it's in my blood to watch, play, eat, and shit the sport.

And it's getting mighty colder down here--which is quite surprising--I think most of the US is colder than it's been the last couple winters. No snow yet, but whatever, it's still nippy.

Alrighty I got my snow shovel, my chains and a pocket of sunshine.  I'm off to the airport.  If you don't see me I spun out and died in the ridiculous amount of snow on the side of the road.

Washington + snow == Total Disaster... How does your guys state handle the snow.  Back in IL at the slightest hint of snow there's be like a dozen plows on the road sprinking salt.  But now that I'm here i like...barely see the plows.  My apartment complex didn't even plow the parking lot so I had to go get a shovel to get my car out.

Meh, we don't care much. Usually we get a lot of it, along with -40C weather. We usually get our snowplows out. Chains and stuff, though, most people wouldn't bother with. I mean, it's slippery, but you just gotta be careful.

Then again, I'm Canadian, and in particular central Alberta. We're used to cold weather. Heck, the other day it was -15C and it felt so warm, I didn't even bother closing my jacket.

Insane, I know, but hereabouts snow isn't a big deal.

I live in the shithole which is Denton. But it's actually not that bad compared to many other cities in the metroplex.

And I know, it was below 20 the other night I think. I think it will probably snow. Last year it snowed in March. Snow in March in Texas. I think many of the crazies down here thought the world was ending and that the rivers would promptly run red with blood.

Haha no I was exaggerating just a little about their response to the snow. People act like idiots here when it snows, yes. But, truthfully every time some sort of political/global event occurs that is bad by consensus, I often see people on the sidewalks and at the university preaching/screaming that we're all going to hell.

I don't think people in general down here are intolerant assholes, it's just that there is a larger fraction of the population down here that are intolerant assholes than elsewhere.

Here's an example that I saw on a church marquis sign while driving the other day:

"Life without Jesus is like an unsharpened pencil...pointless!".

Wow, you just offended everybody of every religion except Christianity. Including the people that attend the synagogue that is right around the corner from there.

Well, I can't imagine how the people where I live would react if it snowed here. Maybe if I ask an 85+ years old person...

I'm right here in Plano--not too far from Denton. And holy shit, it's so refreshing to know that I'm not the only one that thinks some of these Texans are just plain insane. They're handling the coldness pretty decently now though--usually I see people stocking up on soup like it's Y2K all over again. And the religious zealots...they're just all over the place...it's ridiculous. Thankfully I live in a fairly non-conservative area (can't say liberal, or they'd kill me) so it's not too bad.

But the news keeps saying we'll get ice and/or snow...and so far, I haven't seen a raindrop, let alone actual snowfall.

I'm in Denton to get my Master's degree until the end of 2009. God, that city is fucking ugly. It's like they took Sim City and dumped in residential, industrial, and commercial zones like sprinkles over rotting ice cream, then cordoned it all off with traffic-jamfest Loop 288. I want the hell out of Texas.

Funny that we're all so close. My student peers are all so predictable. They want a big job in Dallas so they can make a bunch of money and own a McMansion. What an American dream.

 Can't say I've had the pleasure of visiting Denton. Convenient, too, as 'Denton' is spanish for 'buck-toothed'.

From what I understand of Texas, a lot of people are morons. Hell, one of them is leading our country right now. Then again, we have some wackies up here in New England. One day I'm coming into the highschool and there's this guy sitting with a guitar. I go over to hear what he's singing with one of the teachers. At least, I THINK she's a teacher. She's here all the time with that baby of hers... anyway, she hands me a piece of paper.

They're singing praises to Jesus on school property.

Mind you, I don't have problems with people singing about how Jesus is teh shitz, but on school property? No. I went inside and crumbled up the lyrics to the songs they were singing. Another thing with that was I believe it was about how if you don't embrace teh Jesus because teh Jesus is teh shitz, you're going to burn in hell.

I don't know about you, but sometimes I just want to take everything that doesn't trouble me and move to some deserted island where there was no stupid worldly problems. The stock market can crash and I wouldn't care.

HAH, that's one for the books.

But yes, it's quite curious that a handful of us live so darn close together...but I'm almost starting to feel bad for painting all Texans as morons--it's both an insult to morons and not all that accurate--South Texas and West Texas have more than their fair share of wackos, but up north they folks are pretty normal. But dammit they want religion to be everywhere. It's almost fun to watch the culture clash of people who don't want to see too much religion in school (who shall all be dubbed Atheists, if Texas terminology is correct) and the religious nuts when they get into arguments. If most Texans had their way, Reagan would be considered the greatest president ever, and Bush'd be flawless. So I guess these people aren't so dumb as they are stubborn.

But we can't handle the cold worth shit--"it might snow", "Alrighty, whip out the road sand." And the winter wear...it's just laughable: it'll be 40oF outside and people will wear two sweaters, a jacket, long johns, and a thick hat.
