Sorry, but that crosses a line. I didn't do it to be mean, and you know it. I know I told you, or if I didn't, now you know, and I'm sorry I neglected to tell ya, but you don't get to be mean and expect not to get at least some payback. In this case, you get bitched at for insulting me.

Or just find a way to shut them up without also insulting them yourself. For example, in this other forum that I frequent where I give people advice on biochemical reactions (I have a degree in biochemistry and worked in a genetics lab for two years, so I'm qualified and not just talking out my ass) this one dude challenged me to cite all of my sources etc., etc., which of course I would do if I were writing say - a thesis - but not in a general discussion in an internet forum where there is a rapid exchange of ideas. The guy was a major prick about it and I've gotta say it was rather beginning to piss me off.

But then I remembered it's just an internet forum, and in all likelihood the dude is probably hundreds of miles away and well out of ass-kicking range. So I politely cited all of my sources and he hasn't been a prick to me since.
