A little trait I've noticed from Square-Enix
« on: December 27, 2008, 12:18:50 am »
I think that the sequel to Chrono Trigger is in the minds of the fatcats at Square. The basis of my theory, you ask?

Square Enix release a port of Chrono Trigger ------------> Chrono Cross is relesed
Square Enix release a port of FFVI ------------> FFVII is released
Square Enix release another port of Chrono Trigger ---------------------> ???

Ok maybe it's just a dream but the port to the DS that they have just released tells us that the game is still fersh in their minds. They have by no means forgotten about the demand for a sequel.

FFVI's port came after FFVII.
Also, Masato Kato apparently learned about the CT port during CC's development.

Ya never know. Maybe they'll get back on track concerning Chrono 3 (Brake/Break?) soon.

As far as I can tell Kato intended for Chrono Cross to replace Radical Dreamers.

It'd be Chrono 3; CC and RD hold the same placeholder in linear progression.

Fourth installment in the series, third game continuity-wise, I guess, but whatever--another Chrono installment, that's what matters. Honestly though, even though CTDS is the best indication of a renewed interest in the series, it doesn't seem all to probable to me...But let's keep our heads up, who knows what's next.

None of the games so far take place in the same timeline though (in fact they all seem to take place in new ones, CT included), so however out of continuity RD is, so CC is just as much...Chrono 4 might continue this trend by simply starting in the merged timelines of CC or something else entirely...

I think the real progression is more like this...

original->crappy PSX port->"enhanced" port (GBAs for the FFs, DS for CT)->full fledged graphical upgrade remake

So far we've gone through all but the last step for Chrono Trigger now, but they've done as much for FFIV (and even threw in a Wonderswan version)...and similar to FFIII only they skipped right to the DS remake with that one (didn't even get a Wonderswan port). Maybe once they realize that Toriyama's style works well with the right 3D, we'll get ourselves a fancy new Chrono Trigger...but part of me thinks that they didn't dig it as much as we did...>_>

So true, but if the 'enhanced port' came this late comparing the FF ones, then we can expect the 'full fledged graphical upgrade remake' to come as late too.

Maybe Chrono Next will take place in the Dream Devourer Party's version of the Ideal Timeline, and both Crono and Serge team up with not only the CT cast, but the CC crew as well. Kid has traits and qualities from both CC and RD, and Guile looks like Magil, plus he has CT Magus' moves, his own moves in CC, and Magil's moves from RD. Pretty much all three games (CTDS taking precedence over CT SNES/PSX) brought together into one original story. Or maybe they'll do something like Castlevania Judgment, make it a fighting game whose plot is definitely canon and wraps up everything CTDS, CC, and RD did NOT.
