Chrono Trigger: Schala's Diary
« on: January 03, 2009, 03:09:04 am »
UPDATE: Character Bios!

Schala: A beloved princess lost to the Dream Devourer as a result of her mother's reckless use of magic. She sealed her soul inside her pendant, casting it out into the timeways, leaving her body, magicless and useless. Reborn from her pendant and adopted by the Ashtear family, Schala now tells her own story as she follows in Crono's steps.
Magus: Known as the 'Fiendlord' of the Middle Ages, Magus waged war with humans for many years. But what happens when his long lost sister stumbles upon him after all these years? How would he convince to her his true identity? How will he stop her from killing him, since she's been comissioned to slay him?
Lucca: Schala's step-sister, older by a year. This geekette finds herself constantly running into her little sister throughout her adventures to save the future.
Dalton: Queen Jean Zeal's lackey. Dalton temporarily tags along with the mysterious Prophet and an enigmatic harlequin under the Queen's orders as the Prophet works to prove himself to the Queen
Harle: This enigmatic harlequin is a recent newcomer to Zeal and has proved herself as another one of Queen Zeal's lapdogs. She speaks with an accent and seems very awkward. She seems close to the Prophet ever since he landed in Zeal again.
Jean: The tyrannical Queen of Zeal. Jean recklessly abused her magic and it ultimately led to her downfall on the Black Omen. Although... is she *really* dead?

I figured I'd only announce a project when I made at least some progress, as opposed to otherwise. Anyway, I've been coding fiercely for the past 2 days on a third alternative sequel to Chrono Trigger. I'm currently writing this in C++ using the Allegro game toolkit and goodness I have a headache from working that long!

The game features my diary writing narrating the story at occasional moments in the game, hence the title. It starts out with me stuck as the Dream Devourer in Time's Eclipse after nearly 13,000 years of fighting for my existence. I am able to break free of its will for the moment and I seal my soul and memories into my pendant, casting it out into the river of time. My body is left a soulless, powerless, but living shell as the pendant lands in 984 AD and reincarnates me as a baby to be found by Taban, Lucca's father. I grow up as Schala Ashtear, Lucca's stepsister and from there, the events of Chrono Trigger replay, but my interferece with the events alter the story in epic proportions!

The following is subject to change:

- 8 playable characters, including Jean (Queen Zeal), Dalton, and of course, yours truly!
- A new battle system influenced by the Legaia PlayStation games!
- Humorous cutscenes such as what happens when Gato is hit too hard by a spell
- Never before seen events such as Zeal Kingdom before Crono and friends arrive (Yes, I know Prophet's Guile does this already, but can't I come up with my own creative story?)
- Stronger enemies and new boss fights
- Alternate events such as my return to the Last Village after Zeal's fall
- Totally new spells and abilities! (All techs will need to be redone from scratch for the new battle system)
- An exciting new story!

As of this post, I currently have most of the playable character and spell structure data done, but I still have much to do. I'm working hard at this everyday

Hi, Schala, there must be humorous tasks to create a completely new game...
Any informations about the graphics? Are you planning to use sprites from original CT, or you are about to create your own?

From what I've been told about some of the dialogue and the story itself, it sounds really interesting.

My concern is if I can hard code the image/sound data and what not into the binary as opposed to having a required data folder external from the game

I think I'm at the milestone I was hoping for to get my own board for the project. My other projects never even started. I think the fact that I even have something to show is reason enough.

If any admins are reading this, you have my permission to delete the Spinoff Manga project thread if you'd like. Best not use space for a project that never started after all, right?

Sounds pretty neat, good luck. Is there any demo or preview in the works in the [near] future? And are you working alone on this?

Well having source code is great and all, but it's not very "physical".

I know some of the mods have been talking about what definitions are necessary to have a board, and they're still in the midst of fine-tuning the requirements.  Some have said a two-minute functional demo, amongst other things.  At this point there are no requirements, however.  I dunno... Implement the code into an actual engine, get some sprites and whatever else you're going to use and post some of it.  That will help you get the ball rolling and will allow others to see that progress is being made -- something more tangible.

I plan to put out a small development test first. Probably a small area with a test enemy or a test NPC

That's a good idea.  Stuff like that shows the community that progress is being made, and as a tangible product, others will be more likely to accept it, thus gaining support, rapport, and forum space!  :D

Still, I encourage the mods to delete the Spinoff manga thread.

Ok folks! Update time!

Well, all is going good for CTSD, though I decided to change the roadmap in everyone's best interest. Here are some changes:

- Chrono Trigger: Schala's Diary will be available as a Nintendo DS ROM, hopefully compatible for No$GBA
- I hope by the end of this week or sometime next week I'll have a basic battle system done
- In the following weeks, there's to be a text-only demo of the battle system for evaluation to see if anything needs to be reworked.
- There will be several demos released before work on the actual game is initiated. I want everything I coded to be stable, after all.

I'm also on the borderline of Carpel Tunnel syndrome, so please don't expect this to progress quickly. I promise to try and put out something good for you guys. As of this post, I last worked on the game source code Tuesday before I took a 2 day break to rest my arm. Hopefully the project'll resume tomorrow if my arm is better.

Whoa, take it easy on yourself! As ambitious as you and this project are, it'd be healthy to take some [more] time off and recuperate. And a DS ROM?! That'd be pretty cool--I don't think I've seen any other fan projects for the DS yet, so you're definitely gonna set the standard for everyone else. I don't really now how DS ROMs work, but would it utilize both screens, or what?
