I'm looking forward to the Kato interview. I really wonder if he echoes the sentiments expressed by Mistuda. It was interesting to hear Mitsuda talk about how much trouble the crew went to in order to ensure this version was a just like the original. Apparently it took a lot of work, since they basically had to redo everything anyway. I had just assumed Square was being lazy again and trying to bludgeon a few more yen out of yet another sacred cash cow. But Mitsuda seems to see the games aesthetic proximity to the original as a major accomplishment, not some marketing sleight of hand. I wonder if he is following the party line, or if he really feels that that is what people wanted? I know this a point of great contention among Chrono fans, but I think it would have been possible to revamp the graphics and sound, ala the recent FF and DQ remakes, while maintaining the integrity of the game. I don't think it needed it. CT is just fine as is... but it would have been nice to see them give the game the royal treatment like the other franchises. Now, after re-reading the interview, I got to thinking that maybe the higher-ups -- and a lot of fans -- really did get exactly what they wanted on the DS.
