Just out of curiosity, did he pronounce Cyrus S-eye-russ? That's what I've always thought, but given the name Cyril, which I pronounce See-rill, there may be other interpretations of the pronunciation.

Correct, Faustwolf.  It was like "sy-rus".

I aslo used to think Janus was pronounced like "Jay-nus", until I saw 007: Goldeneye.

I pronounce Janus, Ya-nus at first, now I say Jan-us like the two-faced Greek God of doors.

@ boo: They are both men.

Hahaha, I think I pronounced Janus Jay-nuss at first too. Man, I must have had a weird impression of Magus' Ocean Palace flashback back then...

Jay-nuss! Stay away!

Skull-ah!

Jay-nuuuuus!!

Skulllaaaaa!

I think several of us have expressed the same or similar perceptions of the character names at the 10/11 age threshold. We may have uncovered something about the development of human language...

I once pronounced it MAG-us as in "magazine," but now I pronounce it May-gus.

Umm... I STILL say Mah-gus, hahaha...

Even though I know it's wrong.  It just feels to right.

I always pronounce the 'Ma' as in 'Magic'.

Besides, isn't 'Magus' a Latin word?

Weird thread...

Anyway, I used to say MAY-jis (with jis sounding like gist) then MAG-us (mag like magazine) and now MAY-gis. Schala has always been SHAH-lah and Janus has always been JAY-nis--the stress always falls on the first syllable.

I read several replies, and I'm really shocked so many ones read "ska-what"..
Doesn't Schnee or Schneider normal western names ? (I don't know how they are actually pronounced, but I think sk- will be veeeeery strange).
Perhaps that's a bad example, I don't know if there are special rules to pronounce a person's name...

Well, you wouldn't pronounce the word "schedule" as "SHED-yool" would you? It's pronounced "SKED-yool" (although I guess even that can be argued, especially if one is British  :D). I can probably think of other examples, but I just think "Skah-Lah" sounds better than "Shaw-lah".

As of late, I bounce back and forth between pronunciations of Magus and Janus.

Janus can be 'JAH-nus', 'IA-nus' (as in the Roman god of doors; they have no J), and 'ICK-el MAY-gus'.

Magus is almost always, though, 'MAY-gus', but sometimes I go all Roman with his name and call him 'MAH-gus', where 'gus' is more like 'goos'.

And for Marle... it's Marl. That's it. That's how they do it in Japan, yes? Besides, Marlee sounds wrong. I almost always turn that into Marlene.

Who cares how they pronounce it in Japan? "Marle", like "Harle", seems French and I pronounce both "Mar-lay" and "Har-lay".
