Craw-No
Luke-Uh
Marl (when I was little I called her Marley, though, because it sounded cuter)
Row-bow (as in the ribbon, not the dog sound)
Frawg
Ay-luh
May-guss
Sca-luh
Jan-Us
Mel-kee-orr
Gas-Parr
Bell-thuh-zar
Ee-Pock
Gah-toe (I have heard it pronounced Gay-toe)

This makes me want to make a cartoon where I'm just reading off how I pronounced old video game character names. It's different for everyone, so it could be funny.

And for Marle... it's Marl. That's it. That's how they do it in Japan, yes? Besides, Marlee sounds wrong. I almost always turn that into Marlene.

It's pronounced Maaru in Japan.

Who cares how they pronounce it in Japan? "Marle", like "Harle", seems French and I pronounce both "Mar-lay" and "Har-lay".

Actually, Marle and Harle in French are pronounced Marl and Harl (or Arl).

Did someone say Britain?

I've always pronounced it 'Doolten'--like 'fool' but with a -ten and a 'd' on the front. 'Dahlten', with the 'al' sounding like the 'ole' in 'cajole', is plausible. If I'm understanding The J correctly, Americans would typically say it differently, which never even occured to me in my own British bubble!

Well, you wouldn't pronounce the word "schedule" as "SHED-yool" would you? It's pronounced "SKED-yool" (although I guess even that can be argued, especially if one is British  :D). I can probably think of other examples, but I just think "Skah-Lah" sounds better than "Shaw-lah".

I see. Maybe when I saw that in a name for the first time, I began to think all names should be pronounced like that.
First impressions are most lasting.

I read several replies, and I'm really shocked so many ones read "ska-what"..  :shock:
Doesn't Schnee or Schneider normal western names ? (I don't know how they are actually pronounced, but I think sk- will be veeeeery strange).
Perhaps that's a bad example, I don't know if there are special rules to pronounce a person's name...

But were the people of Zeal speaking with an American accent?

Hmm, I think it would be normal if it was translated into Sarah.
Someone used Schala instead, why?

BTW, I don't know German, but I did remember some words that begin with Sch-.
Snake - Schlange
Swine - Schwein
Snow - Schnee
Sob - Schluchzer

I think the English translations used "Schala" to make her sound more exotiqué. I think it was unnecessary.

Oh, and there's also schnauzer, schnitzel & schnapps.

Schnitzel!

There's a video showcasing the 6 normal characters of Chrono Trigger and when they put up Marle, they put it up as Marl. I think we linked to it or something like that...

Lucca = LOO-kah

Crono = KRAW-no

Ayla = EYE-lah

Melchior = MEHL-ki-or

Belthazar = BELL-thah-zahr

Yeah, that's... all I can think of now. Still early in the morning.

... Since when is Crono pronounced "Kraw-no"? I always pronounce it "Kroe-No", considering the game is pronounced "Kroe-no Trih-gerr".

Aye, same here--I always figured the word Chrono was pronounced KROE-no, and Crono was a homonym from Chrono...But apparently it is pronounced KRON-oh.

Damn it all.

Melchior = Mel-KEY-ore (I have a friend with that name :D)
Magus = MA (as in map) - gus (Funny story on this one. When I first played CT, I thought there was an i in that name. So for the longest time, he was Mag-EE-us.)
Schala = switch between Shaw-lah and Skah-law. I like both.
Janus = switch between JAY-nus, JA (map) - noos, and Janice (that last one is my mom...)
Marle = MAR-lee. Everything else sounds too manly.
Belthazar = Bell-thuh-zahr.
