Chrono Reviews?
« on: March 02, 2009, 06:59:39 pm »
Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I need help.

Today I was talking with a friend on why Chrono Trigger is so good and they're arguing Kingdom Hearts 2 is dominant. Either I'm a bad explainer or he isn't good at picturing descriptions, so i figured that there is a lot of people here at the Compendium who are much better at phrasing things than me so I'm curious how you'd write up a review for Chrono Trigger. Preferably DS version but if you don't know it then SNES version is good too! one thing that really sticks out though is the message it delivers. Way I see it, CT delivers multiple messages but that(apparantly)isn't good enough so, any help?

Hmmm...If I recall, I remember there being a fairly big huzzah during CT's birthday at the Compendium with people giving their opinions about it & junk...I'll have to dig around to see if I can find what I'm talking about though...

I haven't played KH2 though, so I couldn't make a comparison...

Yeah, don't have to have played both since my friend has yet to play CT(not sure if he ever will).

If there was one single phrase to describe Chrono Trigger...

Personally I can't pull it off.  I can say many things about it, but to single out one phrase that sums up the whole of the game experience is difficult.  I could say it's thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end, with no slowdown in story progression or action thoughout.  That really doesn't tell much about the game itself though, just the feeling I get playing it.

Anyways, if your friend hails KH2 above other RPGs there's a major problem already.  KH2 isn't an RPG, it's an action platformer.  Sure it has RPG elements like weapons levels and spells, but in basics it's jumping around, fighting in real time combat against monsters, and exploring levels akin to the most basic of platform games.

Maybe if SquareEnix weren't a bunch of idiots, and actually included some of the cast from other games besides Final Fantasy there might be some interest.  (Seriously, they combine Disney with their own franchises, and don't take anything from Chrono/Mana/SaGa/etc?)

I'm pretty sure it's a mostly Nomura thing...And seeing how he managed to mess up Setzer, I don't think I'd like to see them touch to much of the rest of their properties...

True.  We'd prolly wind up with Crono having some new age emo/punk hairstyle instead of his original scatterhair, buckles everywhere, and of course, zippers...

Prolly wind up looking something like this.

I doubt that's what'd happen. Although very close, what I feel is even closer is...

Crono: Sora! Heads up!
Marle: Oh my gosh! He spoke!
Sora: Is that good?
Lucca: No! The fourth wall is broken!
Crono begins inflating.
Crono: I love you!
Crono explodes along with not only their world but the entire KH universe(meaning not only the end of Chrono, but the end of Final Fantasy, the end of Kingdom Hearts, the end of Disney, the end of Sony, the end of gaming!)!

That sketch would likely outclass whatever bondage-motif would likely be implemented, which I find sad. Nice usage of the MSPaint line-drawing tool.

And yeah, symmetry is overrated. That's why I wear a watch.

To get back on topic, Adam Sessler said something to the effect of this, regarding CT during the X-Play Holiday Gift show; the only thing that I could think of that would do the game justice:

"If you haven't heard of Chrono Trigger before; after the show, go out and buy. This. Game."

Yes, I watch X-Play. Mock me later.

I like Adam & Morgan (they're both the two most believable nerd/dorks on G4 & both carried over from Tech TV...well, Blair Butler seems as dorky as she appears...maybe Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn too...)...& they both like Chrono Trigger...So all is right with the world.

I remember someone else at one time making a Nomura-inspired Crono drawing...there was a zipper on his sword even...! I forget who did it though, much less where it is...>_>

well you could always explain to you're friend that chrono trigger defined the gaming world of 1995, and all modern rpg's came from ct's mold.

First off, your friend is comparing something to Kingdom Hearts.

That is all.

That is... great.  Inspiring, really.

I'd do the whole cast like this if I could still draw decently.

Tried. Believes "Just because it was earlier doesn't mean it's better."

Actually, before I read your comment, I coincidentally told him just that. The argument was dropped about 2 days ago and we agreed that I (temporarily I'm betting)won the argument of CT dominating simply for the fact I have done EVERYTHING in both versions(and I mean all American, European, and Japanese versions for both games as well and have the extra features versions for both games)so he believes that "You're probably right since you've played them both and I guess I'll give it a chance next time I see it."

Chrono is victorious.

I've had a similar argument with another friend about another game before however:
Zelda is a pretty fierce opponent I must admit. That argument's been running strong for about 5 years now. With a major Zelda nerd who's played the series through more than I have Chrono!

Anyways, thanks for the help!
...
I guess this concludes this thread for now?
