Table Top Kingdom of Zeal
« on: March 02, 2009, 09:20:47 pm »
Hello Everybody, I figured this would be the best place to post my idea for something I've really been wanting to work on and hopefully get some advice or find someone will to help me out. But first I need to do some explaining on what I'm trying to do.

I'm trying to make a fan module for a tabletop role playing game called Mage: The Awakening. For those that don't Roleplay but have an idea of it. Think Dungeons and Dragons except modern era and dealing with people who can wield magic, hidden away from regular mudane people.

What I, Myself, am trying to do, is build a game setting, Made from the Kingdom of Zeal from Chrono Trigger and Cross.

Now, My main idea was to take example of the reptite dimension, and create a slightly alternate Kingdom of Zeal, one where Chrono and friends did not appear, but instead a group of Enlightened humans (the people who play) who rise up and either help bring about the downfall of Zeal or perhaps save it from it's fate. The good news for me is that I already have all the dice rules since I'm just lifting most of them from the Mage book.

But what I really need is kind of detailed analysis (more than likely theoretical ideas) and detailed descriptions about the locations of Zeal itself. How the Society is, what life is like on in Ehasa and Kajar and the Zeal Palace. I've tried writing them up myself, but I find myself coming up with major writer's block in that area.

Instead, I've been able to make up rules and stats for things such as Schala's Pendant, the Ruby Knife, the Nu, the Mammon Machine, the Spring of Recovery. Plus the character stats for the main characters such as Queen Zeal and the Gurus. All the mechanic fame stuff that doesn't have any real impact on the setting to a degree.

Any advice anyone can give me? Anyone else a Tabletop player like me, who dreams of playing games set in Zeal?

Have you ever played Call of Cthulhu?  I think its system would be pretty great to adapt Zeal to.  Mostly because I love the idea of going insane / making sacrifice to cast spells.  Plus, their power comes from Lavos, so it would be apt.

Try asking ZeaLity and the folks who worked on a simalar writing project, project ZEAL. They'll be able to help you. I also encourage you to check out the RP section of the site, it's filled with people like me and you who enjoy this sort of thing. Well, that's my 2 cents.

My question would be whether this would be a single adventure, a longer campaign, or one that would be adapted for as much play as wanted.  Given the last two, I think it would be awesome to flesh and extend Zeal, each city being an actual city rather than a single building.  That you made stats for the ruby knife makes it seem like you're going for something shorter - one can't very well get one of the better items until near the "end."  Have you thought about asking Zakyrus about Zealstuffs?  I know he wanted bits of text for the library and everything.  He'd probably be a good resource.

Well like all good World of Darkness games (With Mage: The Awakening being a type of rules and setting), I was hoping to make it large and adaptable for as much play as wanted in the Kingdom Zeal, where true to the environs, the player's actions have a heavy influence on what happens next whether or not they realize it. But I had also planned that once it is all written out, that it will contain a small little extra guide for the Dungeon Master, or in this case, the Storyteller so they could adapt the classic scenario of the Royal Family of Zeal falling into madness from the corruption of Lavos (or presumably something equally grand, if not Lavos itself.)

When I made the mechanical stats for items like the ruby knife, I was thinking in more in general uses and ideas for them. Surely you can't have Schala without her Dreamstone/Doreen Pendant. Or have Melchior without the dreams contained in the Ruby Knife (and Thus Masa & Mune) I figure I'd write out the stats for the very well known and established rare and enchanted items and creatures before going on to more custom and possibly theoretical items Zeal might have, such as those wonderful Enchanted Capsules.

As for asking around for resource material to work with. I've been checking out the Project ZEAL archives that both ZeaLity and Hyper Nerd have recommended, but I haven't seen anything called ZealStuffs, what is that exactly?

I think Zealstuffs just means items from Zeal.
