Chrono Trigger PCM Sample Sources
« on: March 08, 2009, 09:52:10 am »
Recently, I've been doing some research into the sources of base sound samples that were used to synthesize music in various older video games. I've managed to source one sample from Chrono Trigger. More might come in the future, I'll update the list if they do. If anyone else can identify any of the samples, feel free to contribute. I'm not sure if anyone else finds this sort of thing interesting, but...

List format

#XX (Sample Code as defined in the Compendium's CT Instrument Bank) - Description
Source Hardware/Library - Sample name as defined in Source (links to recording of source sample so you can compare for yourself)

#29 - Strange Loop (2300 AD Map)
Korg M1 - Rhythm

Interesting! Was the original sample slowed down for use in CT?

In-game, it's played at a lower pitch (and hence slower speed) than the example I posted (which was C5). I'm not sure what the actual base note of the sample is, either in its original form on the M1 or in CT. However, the Prerelease version of the 2300 AD map music has it playing higher/faster than the version in the final game.
