What if it isnt his soul, but his essence.

Everything that made him "him", but not exactly him himself...?

Then it probably would have been a white cloud instead of a sparkle.  The japanese depiction of anything outside of the physical body that's related to/apart of the identity of a person in anime/video games stylized like an anime is either a) a translucent version of themselves or b) a puffy cloud.

Crazy how one little anime version of the scene can cause so much confusion. I've always felt it was the pendant myself since that makes the most sense. You'd think that Bird Studios would get that right and not make it so confusing. They also get a double dose of WTF? since it's Akira Toriyama's company and all. At the very least I'd figure THEY would know what the hell is going on in the scene. Of course then again in AT's defense he didn't write any of it did he?

To me, that sparkle is no doubt his soul(or sprite, or aura, or energy, or whatever presents his life).

Always thought of it as his soul leaving his body. That few seconds of your life flashing before your eyes things going on as he peaked inside/at his soul.

It was his soul going into a dragonball.

Completely agreed.

I'm comfortable with saying that Toei made the scene based on the game, which used the sparkle to represent the pendant. Thus, the sparkle is a misguided, derivative pendant.

It's just weird that his soul would dramatically pop out like that, when other characters killed in the Chrono series don't do this.

Lavos used a HellSoul Element, Lavos cheated!
Yeah, you see, maybe it is just one of Lavos' skill, it wanted to suck Magus's magic power before the event, but Crono disturbed that.

He did have a very special death, besides Lavos, he was disintegrated. Maybe Lavos absorbed him? Maybe thats how Lavos gets DNA they have to die then he steals their soul.

Souls do not contain DNA. If Lavos wanted Crono's DNA, he would have absorbed Crono's body or those ashes. Besides, the sparkle/pendant/soul followed Schala back into the Ocean Palace, it was not absorbed.
Absorbing a soul is something a warlock would do, to harness it as a form of energy for some spell.

Souls do not contain DNA.

Or does it...

Serge got swapped into Lynx's body but a new, DNA-correct Serge-Body was eventually created without any base genetic material. The Dragon Tear had to get the DNA code from somewhere, yes?

From AW's Dragon Tear, considering being needed for the swap to happen, and then Serge receives it as the Tear of Hate. After, HW's Dragon Tear collects it from it.

So its simpler to assume that the Dragon Tear physically took DNA (when there is no indication that it effected DNA at all), than to assume that in the Chronoverse, souls have an imprint of DNA on them?
