i think that lavos is simply one being of ultimate power, its all one godly creature
the final form is simply the unprotected being underneath the second form which its connected to the first form
its all one being with several layers of protection

all 3 forms of lavos are lavos to some extent. but the lavos core is the essence of lavos - it is the culmination of genetic material into the best possible form that lavos could create for itself. that would explain why the central bit (and the inner form) are humanoid - humans are the most dominant and successful species on the planet, so lavos would be greatly (but not entirely) influenced by humans.

id also argue that lavos was the humanoid central bit, but he transferred his "essence" or mind into the right bit as a deceptive defense.

as far as the origin of lavos, who knows. the outer shell would probably be useful in space travel and burrowing into planets, but everything else is very open-ended.

picture of lavos' core from the prerelease version. it really doesnt look anything like the inside of some living organism. looks alot like the inner structure of some kind of vehicle. and we see all these "tube" things connecting to lavos 2nd stage. my hypothesis is that lavos 1st stage is the craft. 2nd stage is the life support. 3rd stage is the being. and that it can control and feel etc all the other stages.

There is some sort of metal all around the second form. The shell is probably some some of bio-organic machine. Second form would be its strength-enhancing armor (Like the lil aliens wear in Independence Day), and the final stage is his naked, fragile, unprotected self. We need the outer shell to be a living machine for the Frozen Flame to be of worth...

The pre-release picture make it look like it's a robot, or to some extent, an armor of sorts.
The very core/essence of Lavos may even be his/hers/its actual and only true form, being the other two a spaceship(shell) and an armor(the 2nd form)

I thought that the Core was just the Inner Shell merged with all the DNA housed within the Inner Shell's chamber. The Right Bit could've been the "heart" or the actual center of Lavos released. The Left Bit could've been a "dummy" to draw suspicion away from the Right Bit.
