First Chrono Trigger, now Chrono Cross?
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:47:35 pm »
Seeing as Chrono trigger made it to DS, why not port Chrono Cross over to DS? I mean, seriously? Give me a good reason why they shouldnt, it would have been nice to release both at the same time, but even if there is some time apart, ill be happy. Plus, it'll mae it more complete anyway. Why just port over Trigger, but not Cross? They HAVE to do it.

Well, I also agree that it should be given the same treatment, just not on the DS. I don't think the DS would be capable. If it's done, then it should be for the PSP.

... didn't we already have a thread like this?

I don't know much about the whole DS capabilities thing, but maybe they'll make another release or port. Maybe. Who knows.

I believe porting Cross to the DS is entirely possible.  For one, the bulk of the memory for Cross's two discs is in the form of FMV sequences, as it was for most Square PS1 games.  One obvious reduction in the memory size is reducing the resolution of all of those scenes to the DS's screen size.  With that it mind it's no huge stretch to fit the game onto a DS cartridge.

Another reason I'm in support of a DS port over a PSP port is the idea of using the touch screen in Cross's battles.  Imagine seeing the entire element grid spread out on the lower screen, no scrolling through different spell levels required, and selecting your moves with a single touch.  Done right I think it could make the battles even more enjoyable than the PS1 counterpart's.

And they don't have to rewrite anything or reduce the characters because Cross makes perfect sense now with what they added to Trigger

If they ever do it, I hope SquareEnix puts some honest to God effort into any extra dungeons or features this time.

One idea I had is to create a dimensional gate in the Sea of Eden after clearing Chronopolis.  Where does it lead?  Viper Manor, or rather, another dimension's Viper Manor.  Playing out the story of Radical Dreamers on the Cross engine, and dare I suggest a guest appearance by a guy in a mask?

Rewards could vary from small trinkets to maybe a secret character or two, but first and foremost I'd say a unique weapon for Kid is in order.  She's one of the pivotal characters and she only has forged daggers?  Rubbish!

Something opening up on the NG+ would be nice too.  Perhaps a sprawling dungeon from a mysterious new door inside the Bend of Time?

The possibilities really are endless.  I need to learn Japanese, move down to wherever Sqeenix HQ is, and make some of this happen.  :P

I'm all for a DS port and think it would be one of the most awesome things ever (CC being like my favorite game of all time) But with some of the complaints and frustrations made over that game, and it being not nearly as possible as CT, I'll be surprised if it ever happens.

I'd be surprised as well, but a port for CC isn't unimaginable; I'd prefer to see it on the DS, although I recall someone mentioning that there might be hardware limitations. But Cross could still be wicked on the PSP as well, with a revamped translation (to better match CTDS) and possibly some new content. Square really revitalized the Chrono franchise with CTDS, would they kill it by leaving us with nothing else?
