Una is a guy

So, Una is Leena's brother instead of sister.

Hmm... I can't read Japanese, but Una does look like a girl. I don't think the Japanese to be mean enough to dress a boy up in pigtails. Although, the shirt does look like a boy's... hmm...

Oh, sorry, I forgot ...

弱気な少年 = timid/shy young boy

... well then. That could explain the pigtails. Leena got bored and put his hair up in pigtails.

Now here's a good question. Why didn't they clarify this in the English game?

Dude...no way! The secrets of Chrono Cross continue to be unraveled.

Was Una's gender ever referred to in the English script?

I thought it was a misconception that Una was a guy. (My view is probably from reading the Compendium articles.)

I don't think Una's gender is referred to in the game.

Hmm, you got me.
Yeah, but little boys with pigtails(but are those 2 things really called pigtails?) are quite common, at least in China(during old days).

Hmm, I don't think English uses different words to represent oneself? So it is hard to tell.

Whoa...I had no idea. I just reread all of Una's dialog in CC...gender is never referred to, but for a supposedly timid/shy boy, Una is pretty confrontational.

Weird...I thought that Una mentioned something off hand about liking one of the guys, but I guess that was a different Arni local...

Yeah, I thought he's a girl because I read the articles here.
But when I was updating an article in another CC website, I found the author wrote that Una is Leena's brother. So I checked the Ultimania scan here...
Then I googled that and found it was metioned everywhere that Una is Leena's little brother.

Hm... Who knew.  Didn't Una have a love interest in Chrono Cross?

Translates to "weak boy" through babblefish.

Could this be a misprint in the ultimania (or is this from Missing Piece)?  Anything from the Japanese game script confirming it?

Just find it odd that the character has feminine attire, feminine hair, feminine name, yet one source says male.

I wonder if there's a cultural difference in the way we perceived Una's gender? It's pretty clear that most NA players perceived Una as a girl, even though no mention of it was specifically made. She seemed like the typical tough-talking tomboy from the start for me.

However, I wonder if JP players generally perceived Una as male instead? Anyone have any insights?

The portrait we see in-game definitely makes Una look like a girl, but the sketch on the image in the first post does look a little more boyish. I can't figure out why everyone would perceive Una as a girl (even before reading articles on the Compendium)--the portrait did it for me, I guess the dialog just reflected a tomboyish little girl. But some of it makes more sense if Una is a boy:
Quote from: CC Script
Una:
   Yo, Sergey!
   I heard you totally blew
   off Leena this morning.
   I didn't think you had
   it in you!
That was real gutsy of you!
I guess that kinda shows her
   who's boss, eh?
Quote from: CC Script
Una:
   A Komodo dragon scale...?
   I don't think you'll
   be able to impress
   any girl with that...
Quote from: CC Script
Una:
   A scale...?
   From a Komodo dragon?
   You're not planning
   to give that to
   Leena, are you?
   .........
   .........
   You're a dead man.
