Taban and Lara = dead
« on: April 05, 2009, 09:29:51 pm »
I don't know if it's common knowledge, but this isn't mentioned in the encyclopedia so... Details in Lucca's orphanage seem to indicate that Taban and Lara are dead by 1,020 AD:

* Lucca's room is not a bedroom anymore.

* The bed in "Lara's" room is a single bed. It was the case in CT too, but that was because of graphical limitations; they could have made a two-person bed in CC if it was still Lara's and Taban's room. The children refer to that room as "Granny Lara's old bedroom" and "Lucca's mother's old bedroom".

* In the note for the L1-Triangle-R1-Triangle password, Lucca says "My father, Taban, would be proud."

* Kid says "Lucca... All my friends...They're, they're...!!" She doesn't mention Lara or Taban.

What if Taban and Lara moved to the mainland and gave Ashtear Island to Lucca? It's never mentioned, and Occam's Razor says they would be dead, but it's still a possibility.
Seeing as how Guardia was destroyed and King Guardia, the Chancellor, the Cook, the Judge, and everyone else living in the castle were never mentioned, should we assume they are dead too?

Maybe, although 'My father, Taban, would be proud.' implies that he is.

It'd been 15 years since we last saw them.  Assuming that they were in their mid-30s during Trigger's events (Estimate Lucca at 16, and estimate parents age at her birth at 18), there's a number of possibilities.  Nearing 50 years old many natural causes could have offed them, they may not have survived the razing of Truce, they could have moved to another town and left Lucca the house.

Of course, if you ask GameFAQs forumites they'd just say Taban is in an underground bunker plotting to take over the world with leg eating machines.

 Shouldn't it be 20 years?
Well, Taban seems much older than 30s, perhaps 50...

Twenty years during most of CC. But during the burning orphanage sequence, just fifteen.

Does the Japanese version say anything?

I looked at a machine translation of a Japanese site and it looked like it didn't mention Lucca's parents.

The line"My father, Taban, would be proud" is a good indication that at least Taban is dead, but it isn't 100% definitive: it implies he's dead, but it could just mean that Taban would be proud, but there's no way he'd know about what Lucca did anyway. The other clues kinda hint that they moved--which would make a lot of sense, seeing as how Lucca turned the entire house into an orphanage--and her parents left her the house.

Actually, this entire topic really makes it sound like Taban is the only dead one: one bed in the bedroom, the room is referred to as Lara's, and of course that possibly ambiguous line about pride.

If Taban's dead, shouldn't it have been, "My father, Taban, would have been proud", instead of "would be"?

The line"My father, Taban, would be proud" is a good indication that at least Taban is dead, but it isn't 100% definitive

Not at all, it is just an indication that Lucca doesn't know if her father is proud or not. She is making a supposition without confirmation.

If she said "Taban is proud" that would have meant he saw it and said "I'm proud." "Would be" just means she is guessing. As Dark Serge said, "would have been" would have been much better evidence.

It is, admittedly, odd that Taban and Lura aren't around, but Lucca's an adult (living in an orphanage). Maybe they retired to florida.

Taban and Lara are either dead or very selfish.

Or under the assumption that everyone died in the fire.
