Earth Day
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:08:50 pm »
So what did everyone do to be green? Honestly, I didn't do much for it, but did anyone else do anything?

I wore a green shirt.
But I do that every day.
So, nothing.

You mean Entity Day, right? No biggie though, E.D. is E.D. no matter how you look at it.

Yeah, I missed it. I didn't buy gas, but that's because I don't need to except like every few weeks. But we'll just say it was for the environment.

We didn't do anything in particular yesterday but we always:

Buy organic and/or local produce, when possible
Avoid any and all prepared food products, when possible
Avoid items with fake fragrances, such as colognes/perfumes, air fresheners, deodorants etc
Avoid harsh cleaning agents such as bleach, normal soaps/detergents, oven cleaners, fluoridated toothpaste
Plant some veggies on our balcony, no chemical fertilizers or pesticides (I can see why pesticides are popular though...after the great Earwig balcony invasion of 2008)
Use biodegradable stuff when possible, dog poo bags, cat litter etc
Reuse bags
Walk (although...we don't have a car, so this doesn't really count since it is either walk or take the bus, and the bus runs regardless...)
recycle

Stuff we should do:  turn off computers, take shorter showers....can't think of anything else atm

Basically, I didn't do anything yesterday. Though I did open the shade on the kitchen door instead of turning on the light, and I didn't use much water yesterday. I do try, though, to recycle when I can and all that good stuff.

Personally, though, I don't see much use in buying organic fruits and vegetables. They'e about the same as the regular ones, they might have all sorts of icky things in them, and to top it all off they cost more. Note that my family is so poor we live in one of those government run housing projects for people with really low income.

My wife and I attempt to generally be econoligically friendly, we didn't do anything in particular yesterday, and where we live tends to squash our efforts as well.

Basic things like water conservation and recycling are alien concepts to people in Texas, it seems.

For as long as we live and depend on the Earth, every day is Earth Day.

No biggie though, E.D. is E.D. no matter how you look at it.

You know, they make Viagra and Cialis for that, right?

I get Amish grown stuff regularly, and have since before organic became chic. I do it because it's cheaper. Same with anything I do that happens to be "eco-friendly". The whole green movement really annoys the p*ss outa me to be honest about it. As a society, we're a lot better about pollution and such than we were 30-50 years ago, and it shows in that it doesn't hurt to breathe in downtown LA at noon on a hot summer day. We need to watch that we don't get there again, but most of the stuff now is just certain people trying to control average citizens more than they should be able to.

For me greener is cheaper, a lot of the time, that's why I do it.

Personally, though, I don't see much use in buying organic fruits and vegetables.

It's that harmful chemicals weren't used in the growing of them. There are other ways besides industrial strength fertalizers and pesticides to grow quality produce (the techniques of companion planting come to mind).

However, what is far far better (and often cheaper) than standard produce (organic or otherwise) is locally-grown produce. It is expensive to growing crops out of season and to transport them from distant lands. Local produce has the benefit of generally being freshier and cheaper than other stuff, with the draw back of generally being more limited in variety and availability. America could easily cut its energy consumption by simply locating farms near urban centers and having those specific farms supplying a significant portion of that center's food.

Local foods are great, but organic produce does have its drawbacks. While the farmers don't use chemicals on the plants, they also aren't able to grow as much as regular produce. Without pesticides and fertilizers, more of the crop dies. So, if we stopped using pesticides, there would be less food for everyone.

I really had no idea it was Earth Day until I turned the tv on around nine. Nicktoons was airing commercials telling everyone to turn their lights of for a whole minute! Yeah, like those sixty seconds are really going to save the world. By the time you finished turning your lights off, it'd be time to turn them all on again. Smart.
And on the subject of being nice to the environment, have this article: http://www.cracked.com/article_17084_5-ways-people-are-trying-save-world-that-dont-work.html

Regarding the Nicktoons 'no power for one minute' deal, it actually takes a lot more energy to turn things off and turn them back on than it does to keep them going. Plus, there were E-surence commercials advertising that there would be an upcoming date where EVERYONE would turn off all their power and energy for one hour. This could possibly waste even more energy than keeping it going(and could leave the U.S. totally open for attack, but that's just conspiracy theory talking). Though I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to observe Earth Day in Texas or something.

But I'm a horribly wasteful person anyways. At least I try to pick up trash every time I see it on the ground and turn off as many lights as I can. Although I will admittedly leave my air conditioning on all day in my apartment even when I'm not there because I can't stand coming home to a burning hot apartment in the Texas heat.

But then again, maybe global warming will raise the ocean levels sooner than expected...I've always wanted seaside property.

I had a bunch of old motor oil I needed to get rid of so I decided to dump it in the neighbor's backyard.

Dude, I'm sorry, but wether global warming is real or not it's a natural weather pattern of the earth. It happens. Yes, we should be more selfconcious about adout the ecosystem and help out making things better. But no, we shouldn't focuse our lives around it. Every living thing on the earth adapts, including the earth itself. We may not know what's coming for our earth's future, but I'm pretty sure we're not going to get vaporised by UV rays. Soon enough, a new wether pattern will come up and we'll deal with other problems. But for all those that are worried about global warming, in the meantime suck it up and get on with your life.
