Summer Plans
« on: May 17, 2009, 09:08:36 pm »
Hello everyone! :) So, assuming that we have a high number of university students here, most of us are finally through with our spring semester now. We're finally free for a few months! My question for all you lovely members of the Compendium (including those who aren't in school and are out in the workforce) is: What are your plans this summer? Do you plan on working? Going on vacation? Live a life of lethargy? Maybe a little bit of everything? Do share!

In cali right now so Ill probably just chill at the beach or movies between tests (yes, my school is all year round).  Other than that, the bar scene here is decent so I'll be doing a round for ya guys every weekend or so   8)   I'll probably end up buying seasons 4-8 of scrubs at some point since my friend and i are really into that show (and ive been taking the dvds from her before she even finishes them hehe).

I am currently working as a banker, although I've been doing a lot of writing to try and break into screenwriting (as a career).  I'm in the middle of of my third (and probably final) draft of a full-length screenplay known as "The Five Finger Discount", which I hope to sell.  I'm also (slowly) working on my second (unnamed) screenplay, an unnamed dramedy in lieu of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".  Lastly, I've written several sitcom spec scripts recently with the hopes of maybe landing a television writing job.

Either way, today I ordered a book of current Hollywood agents, and once I get that and figure out what agents I like, I'm going to send a query letter and loglines, writing samples, etc.

To sum it up, my summer plans is to MAKE IT as a writer and head out to Cali.

I'm 18 and I go to UNT.

For the summer, I intend to have lots of fun, and to get a job (finally! Graah)
Otherwise, since I am living at home for the summer, my mom is going to nag me about it constantly.

I would also like to do a bit of everything... though I don't plan on doing too much outside... Texas summer = hot... usually. but not always.

I'm going to look into a job at the local grocery store this summer. I'm broke and I needs money.

Other than that, summer will be awesome. Swimming, drinking lots of tea, freezepops... good times, good times.

I had a plethora of health issues come up this year, so my spring semester has been inadvertently extended into the summer.  :picardno

I'm grateful that the university was understanding, but it's a major drag knowing that I'll be writing probably into July. Just finished a 30-pager on the Taliban, have to give a presentation on Saturday, and then it'll be the final push to write a 40-pager and be done with things. Not much of a vacation after that, as I have to move in August, and then.... it's back to school in September!  Hopefully I'll find the time (and spare change) for a brief getaway during the fall term. :P

A good question. My chief plan - or it should be my chief plan, at any rate - is to find some fashion of a job. Unfortunately, I'm finding it rather difficult. Perhaps I set my sights and/or standards of what constitues a job too high. But all the same, it remains not only a hope but also neccessity. Beyond that, I have semi-official schoolwork to keep me busy through the summer. I'm writing a Masters thesis next year, and judging by my typical method of paper writing (ie. terrible procrastination, to the measure of leaving five thousand word research papers till several days before they are due), I would do well to begin with a great margin of time. Aside from that, I plan to do all such things as are typical for me the year through - and with all the more fervour seeing that I do not at the moment have anything else taking my time from such things. Painting, drawing, writing, reading, Latin composition... all of these in copious amounts, if I can manage the discipline to them.

I hope to have a vacation, too, though my rather too ambitious plans on that matter were to buy a motorbike, learn to ride it, and go on a cross-country road-trip... I think such a plan will in the end be greatly limited, or not transpire at all. But the great distress of year-end schoolwork instilled such thoughts.

In terms of finding it hard to receive employment, I'm in the same boat. I've worked most of my summers since I turned 16, so I have a lot experience; nonetheless, it seems no one wants to hire. It might correlate with the minimum wage raise we're getting in Texas soon. :( I'd return to the places I've already worked, but I want to try something new and hope for managers of the sane variety this time around. ;)

UNT you say? Up in Denton? I've actually been there quite a few times, as well as the Texas Woman's University; I go up there a lot for Women's Choir Festival. :) The women I've met from there have all been very friendly and welcoming.

Your posts are getting more inspiring by the day, it seems. I would say "good luck," but your dedication will serve you far better than ephemeral "luck."

Also, you'll like SoCal (at least, by "Cali" I assume you mean SoCal; NoCal doesn't have much to interest screen writers and just sounds like a diet supplement). If you can’t be young-and-in-Europe, young-and-in-California is a good alternative.

My Summer will be terribly exciting in that I will be learning Latin, rewriting a personal statement, rewriting and expanding an old research paper on the 40/42 Line Bible into a publishable article, and studying for the GRE (again). I applied to Ph.D. programs in History this last year and didn't get in, so now is the time for fluffing up my application and trying again (to more schools).

=(  I haven't ever had a summer job, other than working at a retreat/camp place for 1 summer...

I'll sound like an ignoramus asking this, but what is the 40/42 Line Bible...? I'm also working on publishing. Had one article accepted for a book a year ago and it still hasn't come out yet. Never expected it to take this long!

Have to echo someone's comment in one of the Springtime threads that it's always relieving to see another older poster.

I found the GREs aggravating. It seemed that they wanted very specific contexts for some of the verbal answers, some of the later words were impractical and rarely used, and the part where you have to write a brief analysis of a mind-bendingly-basic scenario was the weirdest. Couldn't tell if you should give an overview or add some stylistic flourish to things. I remember writing maybe 300 words and just staring at this plain scenario they'd given me, thinking, 'well what more is there to say?'

In any case, they didn't like my answers. Applied to Penn, Berkeley and Chicago, and didn't get into any of them. The bizarre twist to things was that I ended up getting accepted to Oxford, of all places, for a D.Phil - but they didn't give me any money! I think I'll just have to frame the acceptance letter and tell my grandchildren I went somewhere better. :picardno

Hardly; I'd be worried if you did know what I was referring to.

The Guttenberg Bible is sometimes referred to as the 42-Line Bible on account that there are 42 lines per page. For the most part, at least. There are a handful of vellum copies with a few pages that have only 40 lines. This isn't a matter of the last two lines being left off; there were proportionally 2 less lines than all the other pages. These were printed first. After running a few copies of sections of the beginning of Genesis and the middle of Kings (can't remember which Kings), Guttenberg changed the format from 40 lines to 42 lines. My research paper was exploring "why" he did this.

And whoever said that history wasn't applicable to modern life?

The GRE primarily tests your ability to memorize outdated usages of words. Of course, the GRE in general is not a valid predictor of an individual’s success in graduate school.

Well if this Summer goes the same as the last two have I'll probably spend it doing school that I got behind on during the year and whatever time I have left from anything to video games to being bored.  Pretty exciting I know.

Wow. And I thought my research was specialized.

I've not read any versions of the bible yet, so I figured I was missing a particular passage or something. I remember in my fourth year of university (majoring in history), I applied to take a course called 'The Bible in English Literature'. I wasn't allowed to enrol because I hadn't taken English 1000, the first-year introductory course that you take when you're what, 17, 18 years old. Bureaucratic foolishness.

My research has been all over the map, the past year or so. Started my MA expecting to write something on Russian perspectives of the 1979-1989 Afghan War. Finishing with a thesis on contemporary Russian perceptions of Soviet literary figures, with Afghanistan and Kosovo as side-projects. As Lennon put it, 'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making plans.'

The caveat to this being that, unlike being young-and-in-Europe, if you are young-and-in-California, a car is not optional. Getting my license was one of the most liberating experiences of my young-and-in-California life.
