Ah, but what people buy isn't what they want. People want amazing, genre defining games. They buy FF. Only a little doublethink is required in the process.

Ah-heh. Anyway, this is true. We WANT some awesome experience that will somehow impact our gaming life...so we buy what we feel, or have heard will give us the closest possible equivalent to that 'defining moment.'
Well, I've played a few of those 'defining' games...they're really not that popular in the gaming community, but w/e. Star Fox Adventures, Klonoa 2, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath...and, yes, CT...these games, I feel, come close to what I envision a game SHOULD be like. It's what I hoped for when I bought them.
This is what games should be like. Square is not delivering. Shame, SE, shame.
