Sadly there's really no decent RPG's that have many unique qualities left.  I think one of the very last RPG games that actually HAD some originality was Golden Sun.

I think the Heaven Dept. series (Riviera, Yggdra Union and the currently only in Japan Knights In the Nightmare) has done a fantastic job at keeping the genre fresh and fun.

I think ATLUS games are still unique. Shin Megami Tensei games are my personal fav. (I think I would die of happiness if every game was imported over to the US, even the first one Megami Tensei from way back in 1987) Give me Shin Megami Tensei over Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, hell even Chrono Trigger...although it hurts me to say taht as Chrono Trigger is still one of my fave games of all time, just not number one. I'll admit at first glace it seems like the games are repetive, btu nothing could be further from the truth (although it really depends on what you value more...story or gameplay...if game play then SOME of them arn't for you) but when you play 'em its liek AWESOME!

Then agian MegaTen has been arond for so long...so it doesn't count...

I enjoy a classical RPG, one that could never be forgotten. Not the fad of today that is the action RPG. And I think FF does an excellent job of being original with each title. I mean sure there are things in it that have been constantly reused, but variety of FF is impressive.

Dang them and their big business logic! Just another example of THE MAN trying to give us more of what we WANT! What's up with that?"

Ah, but what people buy isn't what they want. People want amazing, genre defining games. They buy FF. Only a little doublethink is required in the process.

...Johnny?

Ah-heh. Anyway, this is true. We WANT some awesome experience that will somehow impact our gaming life...so we buy what we feel, or have heard will give us the closest possible equivalent to that 'defining moment.'

Well, I've played a few of those 'defining' games...they're really not that popular in the gaming community, but w/e. Star Fox Adventures, Klonoa 2, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath...and, yes, CT...these games, I feel, come close to what I envision a game SHOULD be like. It's what I hoped for when I bought them.

This is what games should be like. Square is not delivering. Shame, SE, shame.

Back to some good ol' hype:

[...]word is starting to spread regarding Square's secrets for this year's show. Scuttlebutt is, Square will be revealing not one, not two but THREE un-announced titles this year.

However, that's not the best part - two of these are supposedly sequels to their "bigger franchises".

The sequel part could be just rumour, but hell if there isn't a chance of a new Chrono installment. After CTDS's success and seeing Square's usual method of "make a port of a classic RPG, release a sequel after testing the waters", there's a nice possibility. :kamina

Hope is still upon us, dear god let us pray one of those sequels are for the Chrono series.. one of the few Square Enix games I adore because they are just getting ridiculous in their FF franchise. (Just a personal opinion, I think this new FF14 they are making is stupid because we already have a MMORPG for that series, yet they are making a second?)

...Johnny?

The go-bot guest star of CT or someone else?

Well, I've played a few of those 'defining' games...they're really not that popular in the gaming community, but w/e.

If it is any comfort, it is the same way with books. LOTR, for example, was an under appreciated cult classic for years. It, however, has stood the test of time while many of the "great" books of that era have been forgotten.
