The entire remixing community has been grossly mishandled, and my only rationale is that the antisocial nerd archetype + the musical egomaniac archetype = nuclear drama. Djp bans at the drop of a hat, virt reads every chat log of VGMix's IRC channel produced to see if anyone's spoken ill of him (he once banned someone from VGMix because they wrote on their blog that their girlfriend didn't like him), and most of the judges, moderators, and other administrators are like-minded idiots.
Naturally, the rule for any drama there is to lock the thread, which only makes the arguing parties get more pissed off and scale up the dispute. Banning is very common, which undermines the community by alienating productive members and shutting out constructive criticism or disagreement. And in the case of OCR, djpretzel appoints judges who agree with his musical tastes, and thus OCR has gone from originally passing a diverse collection of remixes to merely hosting anything that fits an extremely narrow view of quality. Original pieces are thrown out because they don't have the required amount of improvisation, or weren't made with the proper high-end gigasamples in Reason. It's complete bullshit, and now that virt is too lazy and inept to finish VGMix, the remixing community pales to what it once was. Dwelling of Duels is probably the most fertile ground for new remixes, and I of course try to support ThaSauce's remixing offshoot.
Anyway, as Ramsus said, if you want an example of how not to run a forum community, look at remixing sites. If you noticed at the Compendium, hardly anyone is ever banned, arguments run their course until the parties are tired of arguing or resolve the dispute, and administrators don't stick their nose in everything and micro-manage the affairs of the members.
I really wish I could figure out why romhacking.net has so much drama, though. Every month, there's some new massive flamewar, locked thread, and bannings. It's made sort of a hostile, suspicious atmosphere over there, and now we're on the wrong side of things because Nightcrawler is convinced the cease & desist order is fake. Thus, both CE threads were locked, so no one can even discuss the hack as seen on the Youtube videos.
