Weird Temporal Science: The Masamune in CE
« on: June 18, 2009, 04:46:50 pm »
Some of us were discussing a really interesting academic question recently: given the events that transpire in CE, is there a Masamune sitting in Guardia Castle's vaults in 606AD in the final "corrected" timeline in which the Masamune was restored?

In the beginning of CE, it is established that Glenn gated into 600AD post-CT and laid his Masamune in Guardia Castle (see 5:09). This timeline is replaced by a timeline in which the Masamune never existed in the Middle Ages, but yet Glenn's post-CT Masamune was preserved by Time Traveler's Immunity when he gated into that timeline's 600AD.

In 605AD, Glenn began doing some temporal travels again, taking the post-CT Masamune with him. Each time he gated in and gated out, he established original gate-ins and gate-outs that would occur in every active (non-DBT'd) dimension: the gate ins brought Glenn and his post-CT Masamune into all universes at specific times, and the gate-outs would cause Glenn and his post-CT Masamune to vanish via Time Bastard at specific later times.

Also in 605AD, King Zeal established his own original gate-ins and gate-outs, and he was equipped with what I'll call KZ-Masamune to avoid confusion. This is the Masamune removed from a certain point in 11,995BC.

All original gate-ins and gate-outs established by Glenn and King Zeal during 605AD occurred in a dimension in which the Masamune never existed in 605AD aside from those preserved by TTI.

After those original gate-ins and gate-outs occurred, the player in CE created a dimension in which the Masamune was restored, specifically by placing KZ-Masamune back in 11,995BC at a point after it had been removed from the timeline in the first place.

Now, in 600AD, Glenn gates in and places the Masamune in Guardia's vaults. Then all the gate-ins and gate-outs established by Glenn and King Zeal are applied to this new "corrected" dimension thanks to Time Traveler's Immunity and Time Bastard.

Is there any version of the Masamune still in Guardia's vaults in 606AD, in this "corrected" timeline?

Well, that Masamune placed in 600 will get TB in 605 thanks to Glenn's time travels carrying the original throughout CE.

And the original's last trip was to 1005 where it was taken during the Fall of Guardia.

So I say that there isn't any Masamune in Guardia's Vaults post-605 AD anymore.

So what you're saying Sgt, is that in the final "correct" timeline Glenn and the restored Masamune would get TB'd at the moment Glenn leaves in 605 for the first time in CE? So let's say that after finding himself in the Masamune-less timeline, he leaves with Crono & co. on May 10, 605, 10:30AM. In the "corrected" timeline, when the clock hits May 10, 605, 10:30 AM both Glenn and the restored Masamune get sucked into black gates similar to what happened to Janus and Melchior after the modified Ocean Palace incident in CT?

For some reason I was thinking that the fact Masamune didn't exist other than the TTI-preserved one Glenn had on his person when he gated into the Masamune-less timeline might make a difference, causing the restored Masamune to be immune to Time Bastard. But I think I was forgetting the fact that there was never a Masamune sitting in the Middle Ages until Glenn gated in with it after CT anyway. So there really is no difference between the Masamune-less timeline and the "corrected" timeline with regard to the Masamune's presence after all.

Case closed unless anyone has other observations to add.

Timeline of the original Masamune ("KZ-Masamune"):

*King Zeal removes it from the Dark Ages.
*After observing the party, Glenn, and Kasmir in 605 AD, King Zeal gives it to Kasmir to stir trouble.
*Later, the party and the Mystical Knights attack Kasmir's fortress.
*Slash manages to snatch Kasmir's Masamune and gives it to the party (he doesn't know it's a legendary sword).
*The party puts the sword back in 11,995 BC. It continues to exist until 600 AD when it is time-bastarded due to the events of CT.

Timeline of Glenn's Masamune (let's call it "TTI-Masamune"):

*After CT, Glenn emerges in 600 AD with TTI-Masamune.
*He joins the party in 605 AD and time travels with his sword.
*During the fall of Guardia in 1,005 AD, TTI-Masa and TTI-Mune arrive (either from Glenn's inventory or from Chronopolis if he's not in the active party) and help defend Guardia Castle.
*TTI-Masa and TTI-Mune are defeated by Kasmir, and Dalton takes the sword. With Masa and Mune unconscious and Dalton slaughtering people, the sword becomes cursed.
*The sword is lost until it is found again by Radius and Garai in Denadoro Mountain. Presumably, Dalton had noticed that it became cursed and put it there (before he returned to the Dark Ages) to cause trouble to whoever would find it.
