YouTube videos load only 1/4ths full?
« on: July 31, 2009, 11:15:50 pm »
What does it mean when a video on YouTube only loads a very tiny bit then stops?

I was watching someones model of the Titanic sinking and I can only watch a smidgen of the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GERribjnH-k

Anybody else had this experience.    It can't be like I am the only one.

Can we please change this thread topic to "stupid questions thread"

Seriously. I actually really wanted to do that. I have one to ask too.

Anyway, Triforce, it usually means that either your connection is sucking or youtube is doing maintenance. Just come back later and it should work fine.

Can we please leave this to the mods to decide weather it's a stupid question or not?

^ It doesn't matter to me if they consider it a stupid question or not. It just would be beneficial to reuse this thread....

Also, the titanic video is loading for me, which means it's a problem with your internet (it is 90 % of the time...) and not youtube itself...

*phew*, this wasn't in regard to the CE videos.  :D

Anyway, I have this problem all the time trifoce, so you aren't alone. Check out whether the Compendium or some other site you frequent is loading correctly, then compare that against Youtube's performance. Sometimes even with a DSL subscription your Internet connection will start to suck like Zaichik observed, and you have to reboot your router. Nothin' beats the old "shut it off, turn it back on" solution! Huzzah!

BTW, speaking the compendium, I have a funny problem while in a LAN.
When I download files(for example, mp3) from this site, the download process stops every few seconds, makes me have to pause and continue all the time.

Although, using a download tool other than firefox itself will "fix" the problem.

Yeah, this happens to me from time to time too, Triforce. It's either a bad connection on your part or something on Youtube's part, that has to do with the videos themselves (often times, you'll find a nice video that always loads slowly or one that always loads quickly) and the connection at that very moment. My suggestion is to check your network settings, and if everything is top notch, then check if Youtube is doing any maintenance (they usually plaster this on every page, so it's likely not that). And if it's neither of those, pause the video before it starts, let it load completely, then watch happily. If it still won't load passed a certain point, then drag the cursor a couple seconds down the line, and let it load/play.

I do support the idea of a common, "ask a question, get an answer topic", but whatever.

I have a question.

Why hasn't this been made into an ask a (maybe stupid but i don't care i wanna ask) question/get an (maybe sarcastic/knowitall but thanks for the response) answer thread yet?

edit:
(The trick is, either way, if you answer, It's become 'that' thread)

You mean the box in the living room that has the reset button on it?    We got a new router last winter aroudn Christmas so if I watch a video that doesn't load no matter what I'll try that.

I watched that video again and it loaded fine so it was a maintance problem at that time.   A fluke.

Should I just rename this to *YouTube Technical Difficulties* thread for anybody who is having problems either connecting to YouTube or watching/uploading a video?

Not everyone in the world is a computer tech or can insert knowledge in their brain to fix a problem *like that* and I am sure there are other Compendium users who have uploaded videos on YouTube who may benefit from solutions.

You avoided my question completely! That was wise.

A youtube difficuly thread would be good.

I had a problem with the CE videos when they were still coming out. The play next feature would crap out on me and the videos would fail to load after watching two back to back. It would always happen on the third one. I still watched them, as the link was there to click and easy to find, but it's odd. I had a similar problem on hulu. After watching videos back to back in full screen, going back to the player would make the whole browser window refresh to the new video's page. And it's like youtube couldn't keep up. I'm not sure if it was because of heavy viewing traffic because they were brand new videos with a lot of people watching, or if it's just a youtube thing in general. Sadly, I have not investigated the matter with other videos.

No, that would be pointless. Don't make it into a youtube thread. Most people can figure out youtube. It's not rocket science and there is no need to ask questions about it.

I still recommend the questions/answers thread. because some questions aren't as easily answered by google...

Why, Mr. Bekkler, I think you've introduced a fantastic idea for a thread! I'm interested to hear what V_Translanka, the arbiter of thread stupidity-vs-nonstupidity, has to say about it. However, I wonder if it wouldn't likely just turn into content suitable for the Frustration thread.

It's kind of awesome that the Compendium has enough regular traffic that members even worry about forum cluttering.

This seems incredibly backwards of what some of you have been saying about my moderation...I see this as a perfectly acceptable thread as-is (ok, "perfectly" may be stretching it). It may or may not be dumb, I think triforce probably got some help/understanding from it already, idk, but it seems like what the forum itself is sort of about...A question/answer thread seems like it would be one of those megathreads and one I personally think would get dragged down to hell with a bunch of people trying to be jokey and giving dumb questions and dumb answers that aren't even funny to begin with...It would be walking a fine line falling toward lame spammy game thread.

I DO still kind of think triforce specifically should be given his own thread to ask/complain about stuff though (The Wacky World of Triforce? Triforce's Confused Corner?). So far he's the only one I've seen to make these like fringe topics that aren't usually disruptive, but just kind of OUT THERE and I can almost never find it in myself to moderate them (I wouldn't even know where to start if I did though)...I don't mean any offense, btw, Triforce.

As for the topic...Did you try a different explorer maybe...?

Ya I've been using IE for the Compendium, tried IE and firefox on the youtube vids. Lately I've been using Chrome, cause of the whole borrowing the stepmom's laptop thing and I don't want to install too much stuff on her computer.  Anyway, I didn't try it with Chrome, but IE and Firefox had the same issues. I wouldn't call them frustrations though. Youtube quirks, maybe. But not frustrations.

And Triforce, just so you know, nobody's callng you stupid, but rather the questions themselves. And your question wasn't even a stupid one, necesarily. The stupid ones have no answers.

LOL... guess that's a good way to put it.

Well I hope V doesn't mind if I do end up creating a stupid questions thread at some point.  I do have one right now... I intend to call it "questions that aren't easily answered by google thread" because it would annoy many members if people asked questions that were simply answered by google...I don't think there is anything at all wrong with mega threads. i'd much prefer them to threads like this which I find cluttering and pointless because they are not sufficiently used....
