PS3 Compatibility
« on: September 02, 2009, 11:10:28 pm »
So I searched for ps3 and cross on here and only found that certain people were having the game freeze at some point.

Well, I'm sure you've heard of the new PS3 Slim and the new price by now, right? Well I'm considering buying and wanted to know how well the backwards compatibility is with PS1 games.

Has anyone tried Chrono Cross on the PS3 Slim? Or tried multiple versions (original release/greatest hits/any other release or "version") on the original PS3?

What circumstances cause problems with PS3 and Cross so far that we know of?

PS. I appreciate opinions, but let's try to keep this thread as close to a collection of fact as possible. In other words if you don't know, you don't need to tell me. If you do have experience with this, then please enlighten!

The PS3 Slim doesn't and won't have any kind of retrocompatibility with the past PlayStation consoles. You can Google that, I'm not in my comp so I don't have the links on-hand, but I own the fat, non-retrocompatible PS3, and always like to read everything about my console.
If you wanna play back the Chrono Series, do it on your PSX or PS2, the retrocompatibles PS3 emule the games, hence there's high possibility they won't load but after several times, or will surelly freeze/bug. Both of my best friends have the old models of the fat PS3, and it happens when they try to play most of games like that, and also, there are games that just won't load.

As I said before, and as a PS3 owner and user, don't get it if you just want to play other consoles games in it, plus it will be hard to find one of the first models.

You forget PSN (though that doesn't have much to do with this subject as CC isn't on it...yet).

Well, there's that too, but if they add CC to the PSN, I think the only two reasons to buy it is if you don't have it for PSX, or you own the game and your PSX/PS2 don't work or you don't have one, I honestly don't see why to waste money on something you already have, and the only "HD" addition it would have are totally smoothed pixels compared to a PS2 with component cables.

No, if they do eventually put it on PSN you've GOT to get it so that they know there's still interest in the Chrono series, silly!

Hmm, everywhere I look tells me that I will not be able to play PS2 games but will be able to play PS1 games. That's why I was asking.

Nobody here's had experience with the slim model?

Apparently you're right? I don't know why my Lunar 2 or Doom won't load, but FFVIII and CC did. I never tried on mine before, thinking on the retrocompatibility thing, but as soon as I read what you say I went and tried, those are my results. I'll probably replay them now, I'll let you know if I found any bug, and my firmware is 3.00 as well.

@V_Translanka: LOL, i noe rite??'

Not that I'm against using the newer PS models, but am I the only one in the room who still uses a PS1 to play PS1 games?  :?

Just curious.

My PS2 barely reads discs ever anymore. PS2, PS1, DVDs, or even CDs.

It will take like ten minutes to decide to start spinning, then it gives up like a football player on a physics exam.

What's odd is that my regular DVD player has been doing it too, but this development is much more recent, and I believe due to leaving it plugged in during an electrical storm.

Well, my PS1 broke about a year and a half ago, he lived his good 10 years and was an awesome console. That's why I can't use it anymore, but I did when it worked.

You should consider buying an UPS for protecting your consoles, I bought one the day I purchased my PS3 and LCD TV, exclusively for them, and plugged my PS2 as well, those electrical discharges are deadly.
