Right you are.  I do appreciate the feedback, and since you suggested a setting, well, got anything particular in mind?  (I'm fishing here!)

I was wanting to draw something impressive emanating from his hand, but the top of the page got in my way.  But, I'm still looking to make a larger piece out of one of these, so the finished product might not be as limited.

Perhaps an outcropping overlooking a foreboding valley of death and darkness... under a full moon.

Maybe that's a bit much to start with, but it sure matches his persona.

Hm.  That does sound pretty cool...

Edit:  ...and pushes me that much closer to actually buying a set of tempera paints.

Progress! I love his hair :kz

You should check out the oekaki sometime. I think it's turned more into a draw-Magus board, but it's still fun.

I've been thinking about trying out the oekaki, but haven't had much time to devote to drawing at the computer.  Drawing seems to be more of a "hey I've got 20 minutes when there's nothing else I could possibly be doing" kind of luxury.

I do enjoy looking through the oekaki board, though.  I check it often for updates.  I laughed every time I saw that Pandor's Magus cake was still the headliner there for a while.

Edit:  I figured out what the finished piece will entail.  My current idea is partially inspired by GenisisOne's suggestion to include the moon.  The blueprint will probably be the next sketch posted here.

I worked on my idea for the finished piece yesterday, and came up with the attached file. (I would have uploaded it to photobucket, but photobucket seems to not want to work for me tonight.) After finishing this, I realized that the style of the picture reminds me, for some reason, of a tarot card illustration.  Following that, I thought, would it not be awesome to make a Magus tarot card featuring Magus?

So, that's what my idea has suddenly evolved into; a Tarot card design.  Immediately after conceiving that idea, I had another idea for another Major Arcana card design.  Of course, the other Major Arcana I could associate with Magus is The Devil.  If I make that card, I'll have to wait for a particularly robust moment of inspiration to do the illustration.

I'd like some feedback on this progression.  I don't know how people feel about the Tarot here.  Is this spooky? or cool?

I should explain a few things about the attached picture.  The circle at the top of the image is supposed to be the moon, and, yes, those are supposed to be clouds.  The real deal will look much better, I promise.  Other than that, since this my idea for The Magus card, I'm wondering if I shouldn't do something to make him look more knowing instead of dour.  (The Magus is supposed to represent the ability to turn ideas into reality.)

Both!

It's amazing!

I've looked at all of your other sketches, and they're all very good, but this is your best one by far.  I don't know all that much about Tarot cards, but what you've described sounds perfect.

Man, reminds me that I should get my own Magus sketch inked and scanned... >_>

Looks like it has the potential to be really good! I can already kind of imagine the atmosphere of the setting =) I had always thought Magus would be Death, though, what with his scythe and constant references to the reaper...

Death!  I forgot about Death!  Thank you!  And thank you for your much appreciated approval, Sajainta.  If these turn out well enough I may try to get them printed on real cards.

Anyway, now I'll have to look through all the Major Arcana again.  So far, I'll be doing illustrations for The Magician, The Devil, and Death.  Hooray!  It's good to have direction.

I've never really looked through a tarot deck, but would it be feasible to make a whole deck based on the Zeal family? (Throw Magil and Guile in too, if you need drunkards)
Also I love that design!

Thanks!  I gave doing all of the major arcana some thought, but decided I'd rather concentrate on one small project than put too much on my plate.

Also (hehe) I was snooping around your avatar pictures, because I wanted some wicked inspiration for The Devil card.
What's the story with this picture?:

This is along the lines of what I'll be going for in that illustration, at least costume wise.  I was wondering if I could get a full version?

I'm in the same boat as Uboa.  I've browsed through your avatar pics, Zephira, and now I really want to see the full versions of all the pictures!  :D

I've looked through the sites you've mentioned on your avatar page, but I can't read Japanese so for the most part I don't know where to go, heh.
