Chrono Cross TCG?
« on: February 17, 2010, 05:38:38 pm »
i was recently looking through ebay to see if I could find one of those nifty Chrono Cross lighters and came across an interesting auction for some sort of Chrono Cross Card game (auction here - http://cgi.ebay.com/Chrono-Cross-Trigger-Card-Game-Bandai-Playstation-1999_W0QQitemZ260477791974QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item3ca5afaee6#ht_9065wt_1166.)

Can anyone tell me anything about this? of it it's even real? From the images it appears that there are cards for possible party member and a few for some of the summon elements. There doesn't appear to be anything in the compendium about it and I'm fairly curious about when it was released, where, how it worked, etc.

Great find! First time I've ever seen it anyway. I'll bet we've seen all the artwork already, but maybe we should keep track of who buys this or ask the current owner for more scans...

from what I can tell each card has an HP number and 3 rectangles that look like elements (with some of them just having a block of text there). They all have a uniform back, which shows that they were intended to be played like trading cards.

The most i can figure is that it worked like an oversimplified version of the Chrono Cross battle system. I.E. one attack would let you use the first element, 2 the second, three the third, etc, and Characters like Dario and the Summons seem to just have a single block of text as an ability.

There also appear to be 3 versions of Serge and 2 versions of kid. Lynx, Serge, and Kid all appear to have versions with holo-foil backgrounds. The rest of the characters seem to have backgrounds taken straight from the game. They seem similar to the Prism cards that were released for Chrono Trigger. The cards that have white backgrounds and lots of text appear to be cards with the rules to the game on them, but I can't read japenese so I have no idea what they say.

If someone here does buy these we should see if we can scan them, figure out the rules, and then load the image files into apprentice (a free program for playing TCG's online) or something similar and see if the game was any fun to play.

I've looked into it a little bit more, and it seems the cards were most likely released on something called Carddas. Carddas is apparently a Bandai owned vending machine that dispenses trading cards based on various Anime and Video games. (more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carddas). The cards were released sometime around 1999 and only the base set of 60 cards was ever released. There is a Carddas website (www.carddas.com) but the site is entirely in japenese. On top of that the homepage is rendered entirely in flash, so I can't even run it through a Google translator to try and navigate the website and try to find more information on the Chrono Cross Carddas.

At the very least it seems likely that this Chrono Cross CCG is real. If only I had the money to get my hands on them and scan them for others to try and translate.

Oooh holographic cards! Hell if I had the money I'd buy em (no need to sacrifice my food for paper). But for poor folks, I think printing cards on card paper would make sense. XD

Like I mentioned, if we could get high quality images of all the cards we could easily import them to Apprentice or MagicWorkStation. Those programs would allow us to play the game online with each other, unfortunately that would require getting someone to translate every single card (including the ones that show how to play).

After that it would even be possible to actually create our own expansions for it, if we felt so inclined, although that would be getting a little be ahead of ourselves.

For now I just wish there was a way of finding out how the game worked without having to blow $200.

Just put up a donation box or something.  I'm sure everyone would be willing to put up $5 or so to see these go to a compendium member who would upload and translate them.

We could try a donation box, but dollars to donuts it'll tip off some jackass who'll buy the fucking thing on their own and not scan it.

I guess it beats doing nothing. I"ll talk to Ramsus and set up a page for it in the encyclopedia.

It'll be nice when I finally start working. I'm hellbent on getting a Chronopolis Seiko watch. It'll be the equivalent to golf's green jacket for me. (How lame is that, eh?)

I've also found what appears to be a solid online card game program. http://www.octgn.net/index.php

The website has links to a wiki that explains how to code in other card sets into the game, so if we do get the scans and someone knows enough about coding we could actually play it.

I just hope it doesn't turn out to be awful.

I've never really organized a Paypal donation thing before. Anyone have a scanner or want to volunteer? I'll try to put something together if not, but some tips on this could be useful. I don't want to make it seem like the site's asking for money (or appear dubious).

I have this set of cards, I posted the pics to a thread about merchandise a while back actually.  I can make some scans, but I'm pretty busy these days so it will probably take me some time.

well that solves the whole money pay-pal type issue. It would awesome if you could get scans of each individual card, but I won't pressure you. Looking back at the post your previous images seem big enough to at least be translated by someone. Now I'm really excited to see how the game actually worked.
